Mitchell Tenpenny // This Is The Heavy // Album Review

9

Modern country is a genre that doesn’t get much attention in the UK so I’m always excited when a new album comes our way. This week sees the latest release from Mitchell Tenpenny with his second album ‘This is the Heavy’. With his debut album ‘Telling All My Secrets’ reaching double platinum status, the Nashville native’s latest offering is sure to be a fantastic album.

Heading straight into the title track, there’s more of a rock vibe with this instrumental intro with the reverbing guitars. It leads into “Good Place” which fits that modern country mold being upbeat with lyrics describing the motions of going through a break-up. Many country songs discuss love and heartbreak through those upbeat vibes and “Always Something With You” is no different. This track is one that will stick in your head and have you singing along in no time. Throughout the album, Tenpenny blends those tracks that make you want to move with the more Soulful sounds of tracks like “Be You”. With 20 tracks, there’s a great combination of hits that will have you singing along like “Happy and I Hate It” and those melodies which leave you really thinking about the lyrics such as “Truth about You”.

Tenpenny understands the process of writing songs which tell stories and are relatable and this album showcases that talent. Throughout all 20 tracks, he takes you on a journey of highs and lows and love and heartbreak that can appeal to all types of audiences. I’ve no doubt that this album will see the same success reached with his debut and more.

Mitchell Tenpenny‘s upcoming album, This is The Heavy (out this Friday, 16 Sep) via Riser House Entertainment/Columbia Nashville in partnership with Sony Music Nashville – available to pre-save here.

ABOUT MITCHELL TENPENNY:
Since the beginning of his career, Mitchell Tenpenny has worked tirelessly to build and support his fan base with a steady stream of new music. He increased the flow of new music during the pandemic and his fans have responded by soaring his career on-demand streams to 1.3 Billion, increasing his spins at country radio, and flocking to his shows on tour.

Mitchell Tenpenny is a multi-faceted entertainer: singer, songwriter, producer and performer. Since the release of his debut single, ‘Drunk Me’, Mitchell has set new standards for breakout success in country music. The 2X Platinum-certified, No. 1 hit that has amassed nearly 580 million on-demand streams was taken from his introductory album, Telling All My Secrets, and earned him the best first week showing for any major label country debut LP at the time of its release. Since that time, the “winning” singer (The New York Times) has received nominations from the Academy of Country Music and the CMT Awards.

Mitchell’s career on-demand streams are among the best out of today’s breakout artists, with over 1.3 billion total and as many as six tracks exceeding competitive artists’ tracks thanks to his loyal fan base. At the close of 2021, Mitchell was a Top 10 artist on Spotify’s Hot Country (#7) and the #5 most-played artist on SiriusXM’s The Highway only just behind superstars like Kane Brown, Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett, and Chris Stapleton. His social following continues to grow and specifically, his TikTok following, and likes are competitive with current headlining acts.
