You may not recognise The Funeral Portrait as a band straight away but there’s a good chance they may have popped up on your Tiktok FYP at some point recently. Well it’s time to take notice as they’re ready to release a brand new EP, ‘Sounds From The Abyss (Vol 1)’, this week. It may be short and sweet but it tells you everything you need to know about this band.
There is only one original track on this EP and that’s Voodoo Doll but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a one-time thing. The track itself demonstrates the band’s very clear influences from the early 00s such as My Chemical Romance and Funeral For A Friend. There is still something very original about the track too though that features an incredibly slow build and a whole lot of beautiful melodies. There’s also a second version of the track on the EP too which is a much more upbeat version. While also melodic, this version packs a much bigger punch that I can see being an instant hit in their live shows. The strong beat makes it impossible to not want to move in time while the electrifying solo and catchy chorus will have you dancing about. Both hit you differently and could be mistaken for two different songs but it’s just been very cleverly altered by the band to have a ballad and a hard-hitting version. The other tracks on the EP are covers of “Mad World” and “Creep”. Both are well-known songs but the band have chosen two hits that fit their sound and style perfectly. These aren’t direct copy versions of the songs either, there is definitely a bit of the band thrown into these too. While a straight copy can be a risky yet more straightforward process, making these minor tweaks to make the songs something more fitting with the band’s style takes more and seems to have been the right decision.
All in all, it is a short snapshot of who the band are but they provide enough interest that if you’ve not heard them before to go searching for more. If you’re already a fan then it’s one of those EPs that will have you begging for more and hopefully, it won’t be too long before we get a second full-length album from this rising band.
