Meath’s own Spearside are set to release their latest ep, “Couldn’t Be Told”, on the 21st of October and while it is just four tracks, they need to do a full length soon, it leaves a long lasting effect.
Title track “Couldn’t Be Told” gets things moving with a stoner/doom-style bass-and-guitar riff intro that gives way to a rip-roaring punk number. Oisín’s vocals are as intense as his guitar playing. At the same time, Cian puts out a sick bass line that is backed up nicely by Dylan’s monster drum beat, this is not for the faint hearted, the frantic pace and groovy rhythm creates a beast of a track. “Sentimental” is up next and there is a noticeable shift in both the tone and pace on this one, there is less urgency as they take a breath and allow a more melodic side shine through, there is a psychedelic little brake midway through that will enable you to drift off but not too far as Oisín drags you back in will his killer riffs that mesh perfectly with Cian’s buzzing bass and Dylan’s crashing drum beat, this is a cracking track accentuated by Oisín’s changing vocal styles throughout.
“Stuck Into Me” has a big heavy chugging riff and bass line that sounds like Wezer on speed, Cian takes the vocals on this one and he really puts in a profound shift, the groove is infectious and the harmonies at the chorus are killer, this is gem what it lacks in speed it makes up for in spades with the heavy groove, one of my favourite tracks from any band I’ve heard all year. Closing out the ep in blistering fashion with a savage cover of Agent Orange’s “No Such Thing”, embracing their influences and paying homage by sticking close to the original and doing a mighty fine job in the process, a fitting end that leaves you wanting more, much, much more from these guys in the future.
