Supersonic Blues Machine // Voodoo Nation // Album Review

The Supersonic Blues machine is one crazy project, forever evolving and expanding from what started with Billy F. Gibbons, Fabrizio Grossi and Lance Lopez and the likes and over time for various reasons has transformed into an animal all of its own.

Today Brit Blues-Rocker Kris Barras heads up the three-headed snake with Fabrizio Grossi and Kenny Aronofff as well as a plethora of talented and highly regarded guests dropping in and out as needs must. The new album features special guests Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), Eric Gales, Joe Louis Walker, Ana Popovic, Kirk Fletcher, King Solomon Hicks, Josh Smith & Sonny Landreth across 12 sublime tracks that weave their way through your brain in a soulful and classy way.

The first three tracks on the album are the original cast members doing their thing, with Barras vocals instantly recognisable and his blistering guitar work cutting through like a knife, track 4 ‘You And Me’ Ft Harlem bluesman King Solomon Hicks with his sultry tones delivering the vocals opening lines, a dark, gritty soul-drenched track that consumes you, whilst ‘Get It Done’ is a more upbeat, up-tempo track Ft. Josh Smith another killer player that can cut heads with the best of them. ‘8 Ball Lucy’ has legendary Blueman Sonny Landreth working his magic and putting his signature slide work on this track as only he can with a mesmerising solo to capture the imagination.

The magical Eric Gales steps up for ‘Devil At The Doorstep’ an enigmatic sounding track, dark and moody with the Hammond working its magic over the intro before Kris’s vocals kick in to lift, an 8-minute bit of magic. Louis Walker and Anna Popovic make an appearance before the album’s penultimate collaboration with Kirk Fletcher. The album’s title track reminds us of the magic of the trio on their own before Blackberry Smoke Charlie Starr wraps up and fabulous album packed with glorious songwriting and rich musical heritage.

A crazy project indeed, but one that would leave this world a little emptier if it had never happened.
