Vulvectomy // Aberrant Vaginal Gestation // Album Review

After twelve long years the Italian brutal death metal titans Vulvectomy have returned.

The underground has been foaming at the mouth for another gore-drenched release from this powerhouse. Since 2013’s “Abusing Dismembered Beauties” quickly became one of the gold standard albums within the slam and brutal death metal genre, the band has been lurking in the shadows crafting some of their most barbaric material to date.

“Aberrant Vaginal Gestation” the band’s release is ten tracks of all-out brutality in signature Vulvectomy style. Mixing the groove of 90s death metal with the punishing sound of the precise modern slamming death heaviness.

With its haunting & deflating intro “Maggots Infested Clit” grabs you straight away with its great effective chugging pattern & sheer hammer to the face sound. Marco Coghe’s drumming right from the start is tight, malicious & packed as a punch. Vocalist Diego Fanelli’s deep gutturals add a nice thick disgusting layer to the track.

Mixing things up by going from great neck-breaking slam sections to shotgun blasting gives the track a nice even flow & allows the band to play around with dynamics. A fantastic heart-pounding opener.

Mario Di Giambattista’s ability to write some of the catchiest BDM is showcased in “Scrotal Abscess Drainage”. Filled with a ton of heavily groove riffs filled with dissonant tones, being able to somehow write riffs that go so well with sample tracks about medical procedures is crazy but somehow works so perfectly. It might be a more stripped-back track but this back-end loaded section elevates it so.
Feeling like a meld of old school Dying Fetus & Defeated Sanity “Choked with Menstrual Drippings” is a bulldozer of a track. With its frantic fast pace & 100mph tight palm muting, this one is a true assault to the ears. Bassist Giorgio Cavaliere’s thunderous tone cuts through nicely on this track. Adding a thick & sludgy tone to the album’s already dirty & gross sound. Even though the album sound is heavy & monstrous, it’s also tight & precise. Thanks to being Mixed by Alessio Cattaneo (Corpsefucking Art, Hideous Divinity etc) and mastered by Stefano Morabito (Fleshgod Apocalypse, Vomit The Soul, Hour Of Penance etc).

The closing track “Rectal Electroejaculation” might just be the heaviest on the album for listeners to stay until its closing minutes. This over five-minute barrage of chaos is a great showcase of the technical ability of Vulvectomy but also their persistence to write memorable songs. The first half is what the band does best. Greatly timed blasting patterns & mind-melting guitar licks have you wondering how Giambattista’s chugging hand isn’t broken in two.

As the track reaches over the halfway point the band still keep the intensity but start to they also start to turn the dial up. First comes this great furious double kick section underneath this huge slam riff that repeats a few times, as its second time repeats it somehow gets heavier. The band stays with it as it grows & grows in violence & brutality. As it slowly fades out & the album draws to a close you are left on the floor in a pool of your blood & merely just a pile of broken bones.

Vulvectomy has not skipped a beat, truly they are still one of the best when it comes to the unmatched BDM sound. It might have been such a long wait for a follow-up to their last album but damn this album delivers in spades. A true showcase of evolving within a band’s discography but still keeping the core sound & DNA of the band true. If you love your music putrid, inhuman & downright savage then “Aberrant Vaginal Gestation” will be right up your gore-soaked ally.
