Stand Atlantic // Was Here // Album Review

9

Our Aussie Pop-Punk faves are back with their latest offering ‘Was Here’ due out August 23rd courtesy of Hopeless Records. The band have been fairly consistent putting out new music every two years or so, and ‘Was Here’ follows up on 2022’s ‘F.E.A.R.’ which garnered critical acclaim.

It is probably unfair to keep labelling Stand Atlantic as a Pop-Punk band as they have shown real growth musically over the last number of years and their sound has evolved to say the least. ‘Was Here’ is the perfect example of that with the album’s opener ‘Wake Up,Sit Down, Shut Up’ cutting through like a hot knife through butter. It has an industrial vibe seeping from it’s pores, angsty and dark you know you and wee Toto aren’t in Kansas anymore! ‘Frenemies’ for all it’s heft still has that SA charm oozing from it’s pores, there is definitely a darker harder hitting quality to the songwriting but Bonnie’s vocals soar through and that melodic edge they always bring to their songwriting is unmistakable.

‘Girl$’ ft. PVRIS + Bruses is yet another taster of SA flexing their musical muscles, a banger of a track that explodes through your speakers, you cant help but sit up and pay attention to this album. The album is pack with like-minded tracks, 15 in total, all quite succinct with the majority under the 3-minute mark, but that’s just how SA like to deliver, short, sharp blows, they grab your attention and imagination and leave you begging for more! The album I stacked with absolute bangers, they take you on a crazy journey through the mind of a band who are clearly open to multiple influneces, multiple styles to allow them to express themselves fully and the result is a highly engaging, intelligent and creative album that showcases what SA have in abundance, the production is majestic so you can fully enjoy all those subtle nuances SA have laboured over in the studio working alongside the guys in post-production also no doubt.

There are signature SA pop-punk moments wrapped up in a more aggressive and purposeful tunes that take your breath away at times, SA have more than evolved they are embracing a newfound confidence and freedom of expression musically, and it is a beautiful thing.

Collab’s with PVRIS, Bruses, Sueco and Polaris show the level of respect the band commands amongst its peers, and righly so. They talk the talk but they also walk the walk, I have no doubt their army of fans will embrace ‘Was Here’ with full force and more importantly bring along a whole new army of fans to ensure 2024 is their year!

Was Here lands this coming Friday, August 23rd courtesy of Hopeless Records.
