Joe Bonamassa // Tales Of Time // Album Review

9

The mercurial Joe Bonamassa is back with yet another live addition to his already substantial catalogue, this time Joes and his band of brothers and sisters have travelled to the infamous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, the most glorious setting imaginable for any artist to play live. I am watching the DVD/BR edition of ‘The Tales Of Time’, which is a more substantial package than the CD version which is a 10-track recording, alongside a 3LP version which is also available for the purists out there to enjoy.

As you would expect from any Bonamassa production it is first class, Joe surrounds himself with only the best musicians in the business and this is no exception, so you have a stellar line-up in the backline including Double Trouble’s Reese Wynans and Josh Smith to name but a few, driving home the songwriting of one the of the best bluesmen ever to have graced a stage, it is a powerful combination.

Joe is featuring material from his latest and 25th #1 studio album ‘Time Clocks’ so we get to devour his latest work in the live setting along with some of his staples from his back catalogue that we just can’t go without. It goes without saying both the backline and Joe’s blistering solo work paint the most beautiful sonic tapestry as a live spectacle, fuses that together with the backdrop of Red Rocks and you get lost in its beauty for the 1hr 45mins of live performance you can devour at your own leisure, and I would highly recommend the DVD/BR version to fully appreciate what was captured on that evening.

Joe’s live performances are always exquisitely recorded, both sonically and visually and every last detail is taken into consideration for the viewer to fully appreciate it as if you were there on the night, as you know the live recordings with a band of this quality do not sound like a live recording of old, you would barely realise it is live at all until you get the roar of appreciation from the audience every once in a while, with Joe’s supernatural technical ability his playing is simply flawless in amongst the sublime backline this is just an education in perfection. The DVD/BR allows you to devour it all in glorious HD but whatever your preference you have the options to enjoy it at your own pace.
