| DENVER, CO – February 24, 2023 – Husband-wife duo VOLORES consisting of Nathen Maxwell, the longtime bassist, and backing vocalist of distinguished Celtic punk outfit Flogging Molly and his singer-songwriter wife Shelby Maxwell has unveiled their debut album. AGES explores universal themes of life, love, and death through dark Americana, stylish post-punk motifs, and disarmingly frank lyricism. As of today, the album is now available worldwide via Broken Stag Records. AGES celebrates the shared musical passions that brought the Maxwells together – from Leonard Cohen and Elliot Smith to The Cure and Interpol – through unfiltered expressions that cast deeply personal shadows in plain sight, coated only in intuitive melody and elegant songcraft. “I feel like the honesty and vulnerability is a large part of what makes us accessible and human,” vows Shelby Maxwell. “I’m screaming my fears and insecurities out into the world. It’s a coping mechanism; to put into music these really dark pieces of ourselves that can so easily be hidden from the world. The title track “Ages” showcases Shelby’s subtly tremulous, Chrissie Hynde-inflected timbre in lurking verses and a defiant hook stained with VOLORES’ distinctive, couple-close harmonizing. Palpably anxious follow-up “All That We Could Need” frames Shelby’s glacial, imploring vocal with Interpol/Cure-ish upper-register bass countermelodies, personifying VOLORES’ intuitive marriage of outdoorsy Americana and elegant post-punk. |
