Alestorm // Voyage Of The Dead Marauder // EP Review

Nearly two years since they last set sail the mighty metal pirate crew are back with a killer ep “Voyage Of The Dead Marauder” out on the 22nd of March.

It’s a short little five track ep that has all the fun and frolics you’d expect from this band Buccaneers that kicks off with the title track “Voyage Of The Dead Marauder”; a kick-ass track that features German folkster and YouTuber Patty Gurdy who, not for the first time, lends both her vocal and hurdy-gurdy talents to this ditty, her silky vocals play off nicely against the gruff stylings of Bowe and Vernon’s screaming, the guitars are outstanding and the keys shine but the track as a whole is brilliant, for all their tongue in cheek antics these guys know how to put a tune together.

Next up to Walk the plank is “Uzbekistan”  opens with a jaunty little riff that leads nicely into a bouncing track that is driven by Alcorn’s great drumming, Bowes launches into his customary vocal assault as the track hits the midpoint Vernon drops in some guttural vocals as the track explodes with Bodor ripping up the fretboard playing off against Vernon’s killer keyboard salvo, a brilliant track.

“The Last Saskatchewan Pirate” opens with an acoustic guitar and Bowe spilling his guts on his hardships that leads into a full-on folk/punk/metal pirate rocker that is packed with great riffs and a thumping drum and bass beat, there is even room for a flute solo, go figure but that’s how these guys roll, this is going to go down a storm live with massive singalong choruses and its infectious rhythm. “Sea Shanty 2” opens with a video game-style intro that blows up into a keys duel between Bowes and Vernon with a little foray from the flute again just to spice things up, believe me this will be stuck in your head for days, it’s unbelievably catchy. Any release from Alestorm is not complete without its obligatory foul-mouthed track and “Cock” is that one, a fun-filled minute and-change track that will never reach the radio stations playlist but is exactly what Alestorm are all about, one of the many reasons why we love this bunch of merry marauders.

“Voyage Of The Dead Marauder” is out on 22nd March, miss it at your peril courtesy of Napalm Records.
