At this point in their careers, the Industrial Metalcore titans Motionless In White truly need no introduction. With 5 studio albums already under their belt, the band have shown no signs in wanting to slow down any time soon with a string of singles and the upcoming release of their 6th studio album Scoring The End Of The World.
Within moments of the album’s opening track Meltdown starting, the first noticeable thing for me was how much heavier the sound is here than in a previous couple of albums, specifically within Chris Motionless’ vocals, leaning heavily into Deathcore at some points. It isn’t long until the band’s classic Industrial-Metalcore sound comes back to the forefront with track two Sign Of Life and the heavy horror movie score returns in track 3 with Werewolf.
Chuggy riffs are all throughout the runtime of Porcelain alongside utterly epic choruses, but the newfound heaviness within the release truly shines with one of the four singles, the politically charged Slaughterhouse featuring Bryan Garris of Knocked Loose that has the filthiest breakdown of the band’s career so far at the end where the track just goes full Slam Hardcore. Following this is the suitably named Masterpiece, one of the best tracks I’ve had the pleasure of hearing from the band to date with incredible lyrics, song structure, and an amazing chorus that switches into major for an added level of dissonance from the verses. It doesn’t take long for the heaviness to return to the forefront with Cause of Death and We Become The Night, while Burned At Both Ends II and B.F.B.T.G bring back in an insane level of theatrics while showcasing once again just how damn talented the band are as songwriters.
As we approach the end of the album, Cyberhex leans fully into the industrial sound while having the best chorus of the album that never fails to give me goosebumps. Up next is Red, White & Boom, which leans just as heavily into the industrial Metalcore sound as well as a great feature from Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo and I can only imagine how the chant of “RED. WHITE. BOOM.” would go down live. Finally, we have the title track Scoring The End Of The World featuring none other than Mick Gordon of Doom fame. Honestly, that’s all I need to say, Mick Gordon just makes everything he touches pure gold.
Motionless In White have crafted truly the best release of their career so far with Scoring The End Of The World. The album sounds and feels completely fresh while being so familiar at the same time. The songwriting, the musicianship, the range of features, and just everything about this release are at the top of the game. An incredible album that shows a band at truly top form.
