Leah Marie Mason has been keeping herself busy since the viral status she achieved with her debut single “Far Boy” on TikTok and she shows no signs of slowing down. The tear-jerking stories of love-gone-bad have become a staple of the Nashville-based artist’s music. Classic country fans as well as new ones will agree that Mason’s new single “I Wish” excels at capturing these feelings multidimensionally through her lyrical devices mixed with her vocal phrasing.

“I wish I was Cinderella, but the shoe just didn’t fit,” is Mason at her most pessimistic, and yet her hopefulness lies in her many wishes: for the shoe to fit, for stars to grant her deepest desires, and for what once was to exist again. Mason sets up a line or phrase that leaves us with an expectation but instead opts to utilize short answers or leaves space entirely, filled by the melody created by an acoustic guitar and fiddle that are reminiscent of an early Taylor Swift tune.

The band and production provide a soft, lush background that is just as ethereal as the name “I Wish” would cause one to imagine. Mason knows how to elevate the dreaminess by ditching all words in the song’s hook and sustaining vocables that carry us off our feet. Mason might just be at the beginning of her musical career but it’s evident that she not only knows what she wants but that she is also certain on how to get there, even if it requires wishing on stars.

Biography:

Leah Marie Mason never tries to be perfect. Instead, the North Carolina-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and artist allow her edges to frame an intimate and infectious brand of country that could resonate from a small town to the top of a big city. By doing so, she energizes the genre with universal pop appeal. By the age of eleven, Leah started performing in a classic rock band with her older brother, belting out Heart and Pat Benatar covers. After a year at Berklee College of Music, she transferred to Belmont University in Nashville. Inspired by everything from the classic songwriting of George Strait, the bluegrass of The Steeldrivers, and 21st-century vibes of Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa, she spent countless hours writing and honed a sharp signature style, resulting in her debut single “Far Boy.” Taking the reins of her career, Leah watched YouTube tutorials about uploading media to Spotify, outsourced cover art, and finally decided to launch a TikTok page to promote “Far Boy.” The song played over a video captioned, “I called my ex to hang out so he could listen to this song I wrote about him,” and it organically exploded with 13 million views. Amassing tens of millions of views on TikTok and cracking 1 million streams across DSPs independently, she continues to connect on a series of 2021 singles.
