The Counting Crows are back with their latest offering, a collection of songs as sweet and delicious as the album’s title itself! “Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!”

The Counting Crows landed on my radar way back when ‘Mr Jones’ caught my attention when it was released in December 1993, and it started to flood our airways, and you simply could not avoid its global appeal. This opened up the doors to the world to a band unlike any I had heard at that youthful stage of my life. Back then “Metal” was life and my world was consumed by the heaviest sounds I could surround myself in, but discovering the likes of The Counting Crows opened up a new word to me of singer-songwriters and musicians that brought so much joy to me over the years I guess I can trace it all back to this beautiful band and that glorious song that kicked it all off.

So I am delighted today to be listening to their latest offering, some thirty-two odd years later, and still loving their ethereal songs that just envelope you on the very first spin. I say “Spin’ like that means anything to the new generation of music fans, but back in the day, it did! If ya know, ya know! Adam Duritz’s vocals still have that glorious appeal that makes you feel like you, too, could warble like him; his easy-on-the-ear and effortless vibe just fools you into thinking that it is achievable, but alas, it is not. His quality is deeper and richer than you think!

One thing I truly have learnt to love over the years is glorious emotive songwriting, and that is a universal thing, why artists like Ed Sheeran, Train, and Lewis Capaldi have all gone stratospheric, and it amazes me that so many artists almsot go out of their way to avoid the obvious appeal of connecting with their audience on such abasic human level, of course variety is the spice of life, but the songs you’ll hear people talk about with be those gut-wrenching tracks that pull at your heart strings and move you. The Counting Crows are infamous for such tracks, and every album has them dappled across its DNA. ‘Virginia Through The Rain’ is one such track that grabs you and doesn’t let go for its three minutes and fifty-six seconds. ‘The Tall Grass’ too, scratches at your sensibility and makes the mind wander; this is everything I love about a Counting Crows album. The ups and downs of the sonic journey, less rollercoaster and more a gentle ride through the rolling sonic landscapes it creates for you. A glorious thing indeed.

“Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!” Arrives this Friday, May 9th and for the army of Counting Crow fans, it cannot come soon enough. For everyone else out there ready to receive a little love in their life, this could be the soundtrack to their summer.
