Cape Town Indie Artist Cein Finds Strength in Vulnerability with New Single “Lightyears of Grace”
Cape Town’s rising alternative indie voice, Cein, returns with a deeply personal and emotionally charged new single, “Lightyears of Grace”, a haunting meditation on resilience, survival, and transformation.
Drawing inspiration from a childhood soundtracked by legendary artists such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, Cein developed an early connection to songwriting and storytelling. Since first picking up a guitar at 13 years old, she has steadily crafted a sound that blends folk-rooted lyricism with atmospheric modern indie textures, grounded in raw honesty and stripped-back emotional depth.
Her latest release, “Lightyears of Grace”, explores themes of grief, healing, and resilience through a lens shaped by real experiences and untold stories. Inspired in part by the realities of gender-based violence and the courage it takes to begin again, the song speaks to survival, transformation, and the quiet strength required to move forward.
“The meaning of Lightyears of Grace can be interpreted in many ways, depending on what the listener connects with,” explains Cein. “For me, it is ultimately about resilience — the strength it takes to endure, transform, and keep moving forward through life’s most difficult experiences.”
Interestingly, the origins of the song date back to Cein’s teenage years. Originally written and recorded on her mother’s old laptop using one of the earliest versions of GarageBand, the track was almost lost to time due to technical limitations and years of sitting untouched.
“I was determined to capture the idea, even though the computer kept freezing,” she recalls. “After that, the song sat untouched for years, almost forgotten.”
Years later, while revisiting an old notebook of songs, Cein rediscovered “Lightyears of Grace” and immediately felt compelled to give it new life. The final version was recorded in collaboration with Theo Mulder through Pretty Loud, helping shape the song into the cinematic and emotionally expansive piece it is today.
“My intention was to create a gradual build with cinematic elements and strong storytelling at its core,” says Cein. “I wanted the song to grow emotionally as it unfolds.”
Described by the artist herself in five words as “haunting, honest, cinematic journey inward”, “Lightyears of Grace” showcases Cein’s ability to turn deeply personal experiences into universally relatable art. Alongside her music, she also creates her own visual content and music videos, drawing influence from poetry and visual storytelling to further immerse listeners in her world.
