“Brighton-based indie rock outfit Canned Pineapple veers between energized garage rock and classic ‘60s melodicism, building their sound on the kind of careening rock that explodes into frenzied motion in a live setting.” – Under The Radar 21st October – Missing Piece Records (U.S. home to PigsX7, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard and more) announced Brighton U.K. rock quintet Canned Pineapple as the latest addition to their label roster. To celebrate, Canned Pineapple release their new single, ‘Done With Everything’. Born out of the south coast’s close-knit DIY music communities, the band was built on the core songwriting partnership of fiery Irish front-man Seán Drury and guitarist Oakley Gardiner, who live together as housemates. Their hook-heavy blend of feral 1960s garage punk has already earned them widespread tastemaker acclaim, securing heavy press and radio support from the likes of BBC 6music, Radio X, and Clash Magazine. Blending distorted guitars and scrappy, hook-driven songwriting, Canned Pineapple draw on the sounds of ’90s alternative rock, with shades of Weezer’s fuzzed-out guitar pop and the cheeky British charm of Supergrass. ‘Done With Everything’ pairs its slacker-rock sound with an infectious chorus, balancing the band’s knack for melody with a deliberately rough-around-the-edges approach. Produced by Tom Rees of Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, the track was recorded with an emphasis on capturing the band’s live sound. Bass, drums and rhythm guitar were tracked live, with the vocals recorded together in the same room. The result retains the immediacy of a band playing together, with little interest in polishing away the imperfections. But this single was not, initially, an obvious choice for the band. “We actually didn’t even want to record this song!” the band laugh. “But for some reason we did. I think the reason we did is because our ex-bassist Sam Cullen said it was good and he knows a lot about music and songs specifically so we thought, ‘Maybe he is right!’” Their unique style caught the attention of Missing Piece Records founder and CEO Mike Krumper, who was introduced to the band through Rees. “To qualify to be signed to Missing Piece Records, bands have to have great songs and the most unlikely name possible, so when Tom Rees of Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard told me about a band he’d produced named Canned Pineapple, it was pretty much a no-brainer,” says Krumper. “I couldn’t love these guys more.” ‘Done With Everything’ offers an introduction to a band whose music balances ’90s alternative-rock fuzz with classic pop songwriting, delivered with a distinctly unserious attitude. With their debut release for Missing Piece Records, Canned Pineapple make their case through the songs themselves. ‘Done With Everything’ is out now via Missing Piece Records.
