Halestorm // Everest // Album Review

The mighty Halestorm are back with their latest offering, ‘Everest’, due for release on August 8th courtesy of Atlantic Records.

When you see a Halestorm album land in your inbox, you know it’s going to be a good day. Halestorm have been one of those bands over recent years quietly grafting away, doing their thing in a ‘Nothing to see here’ kinda way, but equally making waves like a tsunami in the background. Always there, ever present, you are always aware that Halestorm and the majestic Lzzy Hale are on the horizon, about to melt your face when the opportunity arises.

Everest is their sixth studio album, formed many moons ago by a brother and sister duo, Arejay and Lzzy. Life would just not be the same without the sonic joy they have brought us over the years. Lzzy is a powerhouse vocalist, and Arejay is backing her up on drums alongside a killer lineup of guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith. These cats are the real deal. They embody everything about what rock ’n’ roll is all about. If you have ever had the pleasure of catching them live, that’s where the real magic happens. The studio album sets up what will be a life-changing live show down the road.

The album’s opener, ‘Fallen Star,’ is a neckbreaker; Lzzy’s thick, reverb-laden vocals have an old-school haunting charm to them as she cuts through the mix and reminds you of everything you love about this crazy lady. One of the best voices in the business for sure. The slamming guitars and gnarly vibe of the album’s opener just bring a smile to your face. The album’s title track, ‘Everest’, has a real theatrical feel, pushing and pulling at you as its gritty and hard-hitting melodies reach out for your heartstrings. The album digs deep with tracks like ‘Shiver’ and ‘Like A Woman Can’, soaring ballads that grab your attention and imagination. Lzzy’s vocals are sublime, captivating and inspiring at the same time. The tracks showcase the depth and quality of the band that could easily be overlooked. ‘Rain Your Blood On Me’ has that real old-school vibe that Halestorm have hidden in their arsenal, performed recently at the Ozzy/Black Sabbath farewell show in Birmingham. A total diversion from what had preceded thus far, but once again, it tells you Halestorm are like a sonic onion! Multi-layered and full of flavour!

‘Darkness Always Wins’ was one of the earlier singles released and screams everything you need to know about this band: anthemic quality songwriting that will bring the walls down at any live show. As you race across the second half of the album, you are well aware that there are no weak tracks here; every song is cultivated to curate a glorious soundtrack to keep you captivated from the start. There are subtle nods to genres and bands that have helped influence and inspire, creating a sublime sonic landscape that allows Halestorm to launch off in any direction they wish at will, and rightly so. The band simply can’t be held back at this stage of their career. Lzzy’s reputation both as a vocalist and frontwoman is globally recognised and respected. The band is solid as a rock, delivering every time they step into the studio and onto the live stage. The question is, where is the ceiling for this band? I, for one, can’t wait to find out. Six albums in, but there is plenty more to come from Halestorm. Every album is a snapshot in time, and Everest is no exception, but it is a significant statement that says a lot about this band and how, with age, they are just getting better and better.

Everest lands this coming Friday, August 8th, courtesy of Atlantic Records. This one is a keeper.
