Worn Out // Low // EP Review

9

Corkonian metallic hardcore monsters Worn Out release their second EP “Low” on the 30th of August and it is brutal, in the good sense; it may only be four tracks long but by God it’s immense.

Opening with “Deeper” it couldn’t be any clearer that the guys are here to smash the living daylights out of you, from the first roars out of Coughlan’s mouth you know this is going to be relentless; built off a blistering bass and drum beat with crunching riffs it runs right over, a savage track to kick it off. Machine Head’s “Now I Lay Thee Down” springs to mind with the opening refrains of “Twisting Knives”, albeit a heavy down-tuned bass version, but that’s where the similarities end as the lads launch an assault the senses that will leave you dumbfounded; Coughlan’s harsh vocals mesh nicely with Heinrich’s gritty riffs and Prendergast’s drums, Bowell’s bass is insane giving the track a nice punch.

Far from losing a step “Lose Sleep” ups the tempo giving a more aggressive, powerful and harsher feel than the previous track, the vocals are savage while the drums and bass pack a massive punch and lay the foundations for a killer track. Not to be outdone and closing the EP is “Collapse”; another track not for the faint-hearted, it explodes into life with Coughlan going balls out as the rest of the band ensure the chaos is dialled up to ten with a maelstrom of drums, cutting riffs and thumping bass, a killer way to finish the EP.

Coming from Ireland it’s hard to believe that Cork would be a hotbed of hardcore, but these lads are flying the flag and setting the bar high for those trailing in their wake
