How on earth is it that Whiskey Myers has released six albums already, and now is the time for number 7 under the banner of Whomp Whack Thunder. The earlier albums still sound and feel as fresh as they did when they were released, and now the 6-strong band continue their domination of the Southern Rock market.
The 11 track strong release starts with ‘Timebomb’ a Southern gem with a sludgy finish and that true Southern Rock slide that oozes Whiskey and sounds perfect no matter where you are but transports you to the dirty South.
As the album progresses through ‘Tailspin’ with its filthy riffs and solos, again you just want to be tapping those boots in a spit and sawdust setting sipping on a glass of your favourite tipple.
‘Rowdy Days’ is a slower offering that any fan will have become accustomed to by now. If you are new to the band, this showcases the emotion and versatility that continue to keep them at the top, with everyone anticipating any new music while revisiting what has already been released.
Showing that vulnerability is something that Country / Southern Rock bands seem to be more comfortable with than others at doing, Whiskey Myers have some of the best ballads going as well as rocking hard and bringing the party to your ears.
This album flies by as do the other albums that have come before it, and before you know it, you are suddenly quickly pressing play again as you are at the end. Usually, I’d try to pick out the standout tracks on an album, but honestly, I can’t here; they are all fantastic in their own right, and to force a track would be to do a disservice to the rest of the album.
Whomp Whack Thunder is up there with the best albums of the year, and when it comes to Southern Rock, this tops the lot. It is potentially their best work and something they should be very proud of. We are lucky to hear such a piece of art.
For anyone who has not heard Whiskey Myers before, please do yourself a favour and get this in your veins; it will make your day, week and even year.
Whomp Whack Thunder will be released on Friday, 26th September 2025, via Wiggy Thump Records.
