Volbeat // God Of Angels Trust // Album Review

10

It’s been four years since Volbeat released “Servant Of The Mind”, so there is a fair bit of anticipation for the impending release of “God Of Angels Trust”, and let me tell you it has been well worth the wait.

From the opening refrains of “Devils Are Awake” you know there is something special brewing as Poulsen and the lads lay it on thick and fast, a heavy bass line and kicking drum beat take care of the low end thanks to Boye Larsen and Larsen respectively as Poulsen jumps straight in with his trademark vocals and trading riffs with Lund, who puts down a couple of ripper solos that will take your breath away, there is a heavier feel to this song but they still have that killer melodic tone around the chorus’, a cracking opening.

“By A Monster’s Hand” opens with a crunching riff and heavy bass that permeates the brain and get the foot stomping and fist pumping as the rhythm is killer and gets heavier with each passing beat thanks to the chugging riffs and brutal drum beat while Poulsen offers a slight reprieve with his soaring vocals, it’s easy to see why they picked this as the lead single. The bass lead “Acid Rain” sees the band drop back to a more rock n roll format; typical rock beats and airy guitar work complemented by Poulsen’s classy melodic vocals, this is a great example of Volbeats ability to switch it up from heavy as hell to melodic rock, something they have become quite adept at over the years, another brilliant track. And just like that they’re back with “Demonic Depression” a blistering track that is built off a monster drum beat, savage riffs and a thumping bass line, this will inspire many a mosh pit when played live, once again the guitar play from Lund is sensational, this is one of the best tracks on here.

“In The Barn Of The Goat Giving Birth To Satan’s Spawn In A Dying World Of Doom” opens with quirky country style riff as Poulsen gives his best Johnny Cash impersonation before the tempo increases and the heavy hits with a pulsating rhythm from the kicking drum and bass beat partnered with some gnarly riffs and a cracking solo from Lund, love this one, it is a slow burner but grows on you. “Time Will Heal” is a more melodic rock style track with a rousing chorus and guitar work, vintage Volbeat and going back to what brought them to the table initially. Turning it up to ten is “Better Be Fueled Than Tamed”, a cross between rockabilly and metal with a punk edge, it is brilliant, it’s fast and furious with a mad groove thanks to the funky bass and the pulsating drum beat that drives the track, this one is a serious earworm.

“At The End Of The Sirens” is heavy as hell thanks to a booming bass line and chugging riffs that give it a doom feel. Poulsen’s melodic vocals are fantastic, as always, playing well off the contrasting heavy style. The melancholic “Lonely Fields” is a look back at Poulsen’s time with his father as a child, with a cinematic soundtrack that adds to the haunting vibe of the track. The album closes with “Enlightening The Disorder (By A Monster’s Hand Part2)” in a similar fashion to how it opened, rip roaring, the crashing drums and bass set this up as Poulsen goes a little Danzig at times with his vocals and the crunching riffs from himself and Lund give it a gritty feel, Lund has the last word as he closes the album out with a solo.

God Of Angels Trust is out on the 6th of June, one of the best Volbeat albums to date.
