The 21st of November sees This House We Built release their second full-length album, “Get Out Of The Rain”, the eleven tracks are a combination of old school hard rock with a fresh modern flair, bringing you back to those heady days and making you realise why we fell in love with this music in the first place.
“Rain” gets things started with a cool, echoey guitar riff, then the drums and bass kick in to create a killer rhythm. Wardell’s vocals are immense, adding punch to the track. Jackson drops a pretty sweet solo towards the backend of the track that puts the exclamation point on a solid opener. “Addiction” comes in hot with crunching riffs and thumping drum beat, Wardell’s vocals switch between gritty and melodic and mesh perfectly with the change-ups in the track, Jackson once more lays down a great solo as the guitars get heavy as the track closes, this screams anthem and will be massive live. The crashing drums and thunderous bass lay the foundation for “Broken Dreams”, a hard rock monster that sees Wardell go full grit on his vocals; even in the chorus, there is a noticeable edge to his vocals. Both he and Jackson drop riffs, keeping the heavy feel going, an absolute gem of a track.
The soaring opening to “Desires” sets up an arena rocker that would not be amiss on an Alter Bridge album; a kicking rhythm, thanks to Mayes’ drumming and Dowkes’ bass, paired with the smooth fretwork from Jackson and Wardell, is an unbeatable combination. This is one of the best tracks on the album. “Coming Home To You” is an ’80s hair metal balladeers’ dream; emotional verses and soaring choruses, great subtly heavy riffs, pounding drums, and Wardell putting in a heartfelt shift while Jackson’s amazing solo steals the show, a brilliant track. The snarling “Crash N Burn” comes in strong with heavy riffs and a killer drum and bass combination. This grittier style is good and suits the band. “It’s Only Rock N Roll” opens up like an AC/DC track before bringing their own brand of swagger to the track, driven by a brilliant drum beat and some excellent guitar work. Wardell’s vocals are classy and melodic, with a noticeable rasp that punches them; as the title says, it’s only rock n roll. Still, we don’t just like it, we love it. “Wheels” builds on the momentum of the last track and carries it on with a kicking rhythm. Mayes’ drumming is key to this one, with Dowkes rowing in behind him to boost the low end, while Wardell and Jackson tear it up on the guitars, a real headbanging track.
“Better Man” is another Alter Bridge arena-style track, crashing drums and cutting riffs are the order of the day as the rousing choruses get the blood pumping. Wardell’s vocals are so strong on this one, simply amazing. “One By One” is an absolute banger and serious earworm, the driving drum beat and buzzing bass line sets the table for this one creating a calm rhythm with Jackson and Wardell lay down some savage riffs, this feels like a summer driving song with the windows down and this being blasted at full volume, Wardell once again puts in a profound shift vocally, he has one hell of a set of pipes on him, a real highlight. The album closes with “Drift”, starting as a ballad with Wardell singing and a softly strummed acoustic guitar that slowly builds to a full-on rocker with orchestral backing, a nice way to finish.
Get Out Of The Rain is out on the 21st of November. Please do not sleep on this one; it is brilliant.
