The Pretty Wild have been on my radar for a while. I have been putting out press for them for the last year or so on the run-up to this album release, and whilst they have been in my eyeline, I had not delved into the world of The Pretty Wild until today. This is my first spin of their debut album zero.point.genesis,which arrives this coming Friday courtesy of Sumerian Records.
I do not know what I was expecting, but this album hits harder than I had imagined. The two ladies at the core of The Pretty Wild, sisters Jyl & Jules from Las Vegas, NV, are a monstrous double-act. The album’s opener, ‘Paradox’, is a shock to the system; it tosses everything and the kitchen sink in your direction in a barrage on the senses, and you’ll realise right away that you’re not in Kansas anymore. You get everything from gargantuan Djent breakdowns to rap, hip-hop vibes, EDM and Drum and Bass drum patterns that melt the mind! All by the end of the first track, what a trip! All of this is fused with highly addictive melodic choruses that bring it all together.
To say all of the above was unexpected is an understatement. I had in my head a more Pretty Reckless vibe, rocking but not lethal. What you get is an aggressive assault on the senses, and I dig it! Now I’ve had a few people lately comment to me that they don’t really listen to female vocalists … like WTF? And even more shocking, it’s not just men who have said this to me, what is wrong with you people! Female vocalists rock! Across all genres, for me, it’s a quality issue foremost; if you’re good enough, then you deserve my respect regardless of sex or genre. I can respect anyone who does something so well that it makes the hairs on the end of my skin stand on end.
These ladies are slaying it, the music is gnarly on every level, the guttural vocals are bitching, and the melodic cleans are top-notch. The music is an experience as they fuse multiple genres across the songs, pushing you to the edge of your comfort zone, then bringing you right back. Now, as a god among men, I can pen a review on my very first spin of an album, and like many albums, they grow on you, but when you hear an album and it captures your imagination on the first spin, then you know the quality runs deep, and it does here. These two ladies have assembled a collection of tracks that will resonate with a huge army of fans as they start to reach all four corners of the globe.
I approach album reviews a bit like live reviews: I don’t get a second chance at writing one of those, so why should I spend a week labouring over an album review before penning a review? The last time I checked, I am not curing cancer, but simply helping spread the word about artists that should be on your radar. And these ladies, The Pretty Wild, are one such band that you need to dig deep into. They always say you have a lifetime to write your debut album, so the question will be, can they last the distance and keep up the quality as they move forward and try to find that delicate balance of touring, Press and PR and then back into the studio to do it all over again. Let’s hope so, but for now let’s just savour in this moment, this delicacy that is zero.point.genesis as it is a thing of beauty!
I love their vibe, the powerful fusion of genres against a backdrop of killer modern metal; it has to be applauded. Now, no man or woman is an island, as they say, so credit has to go to all involved in this project who helped make it happen. The production is glorious, the execution of it all as a package is on point; one spin of this beast and you’ll know what I mean. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so you may wait till Friday to experience all of the tracks in their entirety, but when you do, make sure you have oxygen on hand and a portable telecommunication device on hand with 911 on speed dial, cos you’ll need it!
Enjoy!
