The Plot In You // Vol.3 // EP Review

8
The Plot in You is a band I’ve had my eyes on for around 2 years at this point. The change in sound from their earlier work was a much-needed fresh take on the metal genre and the life the music gives is just second to none.
The vocalist of the band has mentioned previously how, since COVID, he has preferred feeding singles into EPs than producing whole albums for a one-time release.
“Been Here Before” feels like a punk song told with the band’s iconic metalcore interpretation. Where previous EPs have this angry undertone to them, you can’t help but notice the repeated word, “Stay”, making the introduction to this EP set the mood of perhaps we’ll get a selection of songs that have a more sentimental lyrical value to them.
“Pretend” has this slower melody and almost triumphant lyrical feel to it. Something that seems to have been written with the intention to be a crowd-belted at a gig. I can see the crowd all shouting together “ALL PRETEND”. Like a song written to bring about solidarity.
“Spare Me” hits you with the aggressive vocals almost immediately. After the first two songs were more tame, the aggressiveness of this one isn’t something you can ignore. The dirty riffs give that added extra zest that The Plot in You has become iconic for. Landon has a knack for mixing different noises and somehow making them work. At one point it even sounds like there was an old arcade tune, which then becomes paired with the screening just before the breakdown. And boy do The Plot in You write good breakdowns.
The EP starts off misleading you into thinking maybe these songs will be slower and more melancholic…nah. We bring it back. Full circle. The band showing us as they have previously that they can handle any genre and any subject and still make it a The Plot in You song.
