The first time I came across The Funeral Portrait was on Tiktok and I was intrigued. That intrigue was followed up with a listen and review of their Sounds from the Abyss Vol 1” EP. At this point I was hooked on this Early Emo inspired band so when I heard that the band had a new album out I was all ears!
It’s been 8 years since the band released their debut album, “A Moment of Silence” so for their fans, “Greetings from Suffocate City” is a welcome return. The album continues to be true to the band’s clear influences from those early days when Emo music first appeared with bands such as My Chemical Romance and Funeral for a Friend. If you’re in any doubt of these influences you only need to look at the guest appearanceS that they have secured with Bert McCraken and Spencer Charnas. While this is impressive, the real gems of this album come from the anthem hits like “Holy Water” and “Generation Psycho”. These big hitting tracks take that formula we know so well and add the band’s own twist to it. Along with these, there’s also something special about the darker side to the band with “Hearse For Two” while the catchy “Dark Waters” initially sounds upbeat there is a very clear darker undertone to the lyrics. The ability to mix those two qualities that make you tap your feet while also thinking about the lyrics is a talent that not all bands can achieve. The ups and downs on this album certainly take you on a journey, not quite knowing what’s going to pop up next but always leaving you wanting more.
From start to finish, “Greetings from Suffocate City” takes you on a nostalgic journey that leaves you with warm memories of your teenage years. That’s not to say that The Funeral Portrait aren’t their own band with their own sound as they do own a distinct undertone that makes them modern and relevant in today’s Scene. In a nutshell if you’ve been craving that angsty sound of the early 00’s then The Funeral Portrait will be your new favourite band!
