THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA // COLOR DECAY // ALBUM REVIEW

9

The Devil Wears Prada is back once again with their newest album, Color Decay. Since the release of ZII in 2021, the band have been constantly releasing singles and experimenting with their sound to create this album, a sonic experiment that has no issue with changing genres while still sounding familiar to fans.

It doesn’t take long to see this experimentation within the opening tracks, be it the heavy atmosphere of Exhibition which has these gorgeous atmospheric breaks alongside a more theatrical approach to the lyrics and vocal delivery or Salt’s explosive chorus designed to get arenas screaming along at the top of their lungs. For long-time fans though, Watchtower is where TDWP brings back the angst of their early work with crushing riffs, filthy grooves and elements of Death Metal in the instrumentals to create this utterly brutal track.

As the album moves forward, we see a similar format across the entire run time. Noise, Broken and Sacrifice all follow a similar format of anthemic Arena Metalcore with these catchy verses filled with great groove and rhythm alongside explosive choruses designed to get crowds hyped. They also do it a hell of a lot better than the majority of their contemporaries.

Another great element is the experimentation that the band have dedicated themselves to on the release, with Time being a great example of this with the Arena Metalcore choruses, Deathcore riffs for the verses and the elements of Emo to be found within the background sounds for atmosphere all while having one of the most mellow breakdowns I’ve grooved along to this year.

Colour Decay is an incredibly strong album from a band that has reached the point in their career where they can have complete control of their sound. They’ve grown and matured as both musicians and people since their 2006 debut album, and this release is the encapsulation of all that grew into an incredible release filled with crushing instrumentals, great vocals and hope. Give it a spin!
