Static-X // Wisconsin Death Trip – (25th Anniversary Corrosive Edition) // Album Review

10

Here we are 25 years on from the explosive arrival of one of the most influential bands on the Nu-Metal scene back in the early 2000’s, Static-X.

This week, they release their defining debut album, Wisconsin Death Trip – (25th Anniversary Corrosive Edition), to remind us what they are all about. For some, they may have never delved into the world of Static-X, understandably so, for the kids of today, there probably has never been so much music at your fingertips as there is today, millions of new songs uploaded every day, and you are bombarded from all sides on social media pushing whatever shite they feel needs to be the next big thing!

Back in the day, you had two sources of information, the Metal mags and your mates! It was a simpler time, but the music was majestic. We progressed from the glam rock days of the 70s into the hair metal days of the 80s and 90s, into Grunge, and to have the Nu-Metal days salvage any respect we had for Metal once again. Now, don’t get me wrong, there was always great music being produced, but there were quite a few wobbles too.

When you think about the Nu-Metal days, you had the likes of Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, to name just a few, but right up there was Static-X. With a harder edge, Industrial vibe running through their tracks, you were either in or out, no half measures. We were quite tribal back in the day, wearing a band like a badge of pride, and you’d be ready to scrap for it. Listening to Wisconsin Death Trip – (25th Anniversary Corrosive Edition) is a blast from the past. It has been a while since I delved into the band, and sweet baby Jesus, they rock! The riffs are a thing of beauty, and the dark, dystopian vibe running through their soundtrack cuts like a knife. The thick slamming riffage just soars. They showed us the way, so many bands followed in their footsteps, taking the foundation which Static-X gave us and running with it to create a sonic landscape we can all be proud of.

Wisconsin Death Trip – (25th Anniversary Corrosive Edition)  is a blast from start to finish, an assault on the senses and a thing of beauty. You could easily see this playing out as a soundtrack to a Hollywood Sci-Fi blockbuster. The tracks hit hard, and the dark ethereal vibe throughout just drives home the band’s signature sound. For long-time fans, this will be an absolute must-have in their collection. For anyone who has yet to delve into the world of Static-X, there could be no better opportunity to do so. Wisconsin Death Trip – (25th Anniversary Corrosive Edition)  is a sublime reminder of everything great about Static-X.
