Hyro The Hero // Bound For Glory // Album Review

9

The master of the Rap and Rock combination is back with the follow up to the 2018 album Flagged Channel and whilst the blend can raise a few eyes brows, if you have heard anything by Hyro The Hero before, you will know that you are in more than safe hands here.

Having redefined this sound in 2011 with the debut album Birth, School, Work, Death which was then followed up by that 2018 release which I reviewed and scored it 8/10-  so I have high expectations.

The album itself is 12 tracks that span 37 minutes of brilliance and the flows are as you would expect from an accomplished rapper whilst the Rock is definitely leaning toward the metal angle. This goes hard!

Opening with the album track, when you listen to the lyrics you will hear the thoughts of the journey but also the belief that Hyro has and as the chorus lands get ready to be blown away by screams, huge dreams and even bigger guitars. The result is something as emotive as it is cathartic but also for the listener gives a great insight into Hyro and also what is to come.

That heaviness in the music continues into ‘Fight’ which features Chad Grey from Hellyeah! and the combination is pure brilliance, you have the hash rap approach matched with a metal vocal as the guitars just melt all over everything.

To throw you completely off kilter – ‘Legendary’ features Brandon Saller of Atreyu however remixed by SNAILS provides a dubstep insert on top of the Metal and Rap. Initially I wasn’t sure, however maybe it was the unusual approach – this shit really works!

Other guests in David Draiman from Disturbed and provides his unmistakable vocal on ‘We Believe’ and however get excited about a brilliant rework of ‘Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check’ which is a classic by a one of the most important rappers in history – Busta Rhymes.

Turning that classic into a Rap/Metal masterpiece has to be given huge credit. Paying respect to the original Hyro makes this his unmistakable version and it is brilliant. Just listen to it!!

Bound For Glory is far more than just an album and track name – I believe that Hyro is indeed destined for the upper echelons. The only thing that holds him back is the narrow minds of some who will switch off when they think Rap and Rock. Don’t switch off – switch this on – its fucking ace!

Bound For Glory will be released Friday 15th September 2023 via Better Noise Music.
