Fit For A King // The Hell We Create // Album Review

10

Fit For A King are back and heavier than ever with their upcoming 7th studio album, The Hell We Create. Formed in 2007, FFAK has been consistently putting out some of the best albums in the Metalcore scene. From crushingly brutal riffs, breakdowns, and some of the catchiest hooks in the genre across their back catalog, it’s time to see if they’ve pulled it off for the 7th time (spoiler alert, they do).

Starting the album is the title track, The Hell We Create which features exactly what fans will want to hear, crushingly heavy riffs, and catchy earworm hooks. End follows on and brings in mild elements of deathcore with ridiculous drumming and pinch harmonics alongside an unrelenting groove. Falling Through the Skies moves towards more atmospheric, anthemic sounds with these explosive choruses designed for live shows, and Sink Below brings in more elements of Hardcore with a constant downbeat driving the verses forward I personally cannot wait to be in the pit for this song, especially the breakdown.

Reaper is up next and God damn it’s just an outright assault of heaviness with bouncy, chunky riffs and can be summed up just the entire song is a breakdown, so when the actual breakdown hits, I can only describe it as pure, unadulterated filth. Times Like These have the album’s only feature, with Jonathan Vigil of The Ghost Inside lending his vocal talent to the already unrelenting track. Following on is Eyes Roll Back, which carries on FFAK’s formula of ridiculous heaviness, and my god, they do it perfectly. Fracture leans more into melody than an outright onslaught of heaviness and works perfectly to take a break from its atmosphere creating a dark, ominous feeling. Reaching Out brings its focus onto clean vocal hooks and these massive crescendos of choruses in one of the most emotional songs I’ve heard this year. Closing out the album is What You Left Behind, a heart-wrenching song about loss, fear, pain, and anger, alongside a breathtakingly beautiful atmospheric backing to the otherwise relentless raid of riffs and heaviness.

FFAK has been one of my favorite bands in the metalcore scene for years thanks to how nothing they do sounds like any of their contemporaries, and The Hell We Create is no different. What we have here is one of the best metal albums of the year, filled with everything fans want, alongside some incredibly deep lyrical content, and some of the best musicianship you can hope to find the in the genre. Fit For A King has created a true masterpiece with The Hell We Create and I urge everyone to give it a listen.
