BEX’ latest nu-punk offering ‘Don’t Date The Devil’ is a pain-fuelled affair, which dances with the sinister and satanic. As BEX says, the track “expresses struggles and emotions within a relationship. I have used extremes to emphasise the pain, dread and guilt the main character of the track should feel, but doesn’t. The first verse explores blame – it is the character taking the guilt away from themselves and blaming their partner for choosing to be with them; when they should be taking responsibility for their own actions. The track moves through an abusive relationship, constantly comparing the character to the devil and displaying themes of pain and harm combined with love. The music video conveys the relationship as a personal battle. An inner love fight rather than a two (or more) person relationship. A battle of self hate and harm. Throughout the music video we see the ‘weaker’ character gain power to finally result in the eye gouge scene, where the ‘weak’ character takes charge of their inner demon and kills it/them. Overall the track and video display power dynamics within different situations, relationships, friendships and between your external and internal self. Loving is hard, whether that’s with yourself or with another. Being aware of your actions and your own love language can be a helpful way of making it slightly easier. We cannot have love without hate and we cannot hate without love.” This new single follows on from BEX’ recently-released, arachnid-influenced single ‘SPYD4 K1NG, which explored themes of fear and anxiety’ and was co-written with Sam Matlock (WARGASM) and Sam Cramer (Future Humans). Since releasing her first single just last year, 20 year old BEX has won the hearts (and possibly souls) of both fans and industry alike, with ferocious live performances at Y Not? and The Great Escape, as well as support slots with WARGASM, HAWXX, The Oozes and Future Humans. This summer she’s set to play 2000Trees and Y Not? Festivals with more live dates to be announced. A massive rock fan herself, citing influences including System of a Down, The Pretty Reckless, Rage Against The Machine & Paramore, as the 2020 lockdowns started to bite, BEX honed her creativity and vision from her student bedroom. A disciple of big riffs, she picked up a bass guitar and found that everything sounded better when you played it lower down. With an innate sense of what makes her generation tick and the problems facing the world today, she started uploading self-filmed bass covers of her favourite riffs, dressed in her self-designed clothes (made, stitched, and sewn by her). So far BEX has achieved support from BBC Radio 1 Future Alternative, Kerrang! Radio, Student Music Network, Amazing Radio, BBC Sussex, Gigwise, Rodeo Mag, FemMetal, Fred Perry Subculture, and many more. With a clutch of vibrant new songs in her arsenal and a plan to play live in every corner of the country, it’s clear that 2023 is the year for Punk’s new daughter.
