Killswitch Engage // This Consequence // Album Review

9

I cannot lie, I do love me some KSE.

Therefore, do take this fanboy’s review with a pinch of salt as I throw myself into their latest offering, ‘This Consequence’, which arrives this coming Friday, Feb 21st, courtesy of Metal Blade Records. Pre-order it here.

KSE gave me one of my favourite live shows ever, back in 2014 at The Limelight, Belfast. Pissed off with no one who wanted to attend the show with me, I hit the front barrier. I gave into their majesty live as Jesse took over the reigns once again after Howard’s departure, the lads were on fire and a lifelong passion for all things KSE was cemented.

I have just always loved their high-intensity songwriting and ability to fuse the melodic with the chaotic. They have done this so well over the years with a brutal collection of recordings that, whilst always showing their evolution as a band, is still packed with KSE DNA. ‘This Consequence’ is no different; you get those savage guitar riffs beautifully laid out by Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz, along with the majestic backline of bassist Mike D’Antonio and drummer Justin Foley. All of the above is then fused together by the killer vocals of Jesse Leech, who delivers every single time. The filthy riffage that is tossed out at will with the monstrous drum patterns just creates this gorgeous sonic tapestry that hits you right in the chest. You can’t walk away from a KSE album not gripped by the passion flowing through these guys’ veins in the construction and execution of these glorious songs.

I cannot wait to hear these absolute beasts live. Track after track, you are thrust into a world of heavy-hitting metal that reminds you what it is to feel alive! The technical beauty behind the brutality just completely wraps you up in this melodic cacophony, overwhelming the senses as you are pummelled again and again, all while somehow still craving more. They balance the easy on the ear with the flesh-tearing and thrashing guitars to just take you right to the edge before pulling you right back in with a gargantuan hook you want to scream at the top of your lungs. The album is packed with tracks like this, constantly filling you with so much energy you feel you are going to burst before they take you right back to reality with a blistering signature time change or breakdown that blows your mind.

KSE have done it again. ‘This Consequence’ is going to be a classic for KSE fans far and wide it has their DNA all over it, you’ll know from a mile away that any of these tracks are KSE. Somehow like a fine wine, these guys age very well, bringing years of experience to the fore when they put their all into a new recording.

This Consequence arrives this Friday, unleashed onto the world via Metal Blade Records, and you too can bask in all its glory.

Pre-order it here.

ABOUT KILLSWITCH ENGAGE

Killswitch Engage first shook the structure of heavy music upon climbing out of snowy industrialized Western Massachusetts in 2000. A musical outlier, the band pioneered a union of thrashed-out European guitar pyrotechnics, East Coast hardcore spirit, on-stage hijinks, and enlightened lyricism that set the pace for what the turn-of-the-century deemed heavy.

2002’s Alive Or Just Breathing became avowed as a definitive album, being named among “The Top 100 Greatest Metal Albums of the Decade” by Decibel and celebrated by everyone from Metal Hammer to Revolver. Not only did they bust open the floodgates for dozens to follow, but they also garnered three GRAMMY® Award nominations in the category of “Best Metal Performance” in 2005, 2014, and 2019, a gold certification for The End of Heartache [2004], and a platinum certification for As Daylight Dies [2006].

The group landed three consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with Killswitch Engage [2009], Disarm The Descent [2013], and their career high best bow at #6 with Incarnate [2016]. The latter two releases, along with 2019’s Atonement, would also both capture #1 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

The band’s total streams are nearing 3 billion to date, while they’ve remained consummate road warriors who’ve sold out countless headline tours and have shared stages with everyone from Iron Maiden to Slipknot to Slayer to My Chemical Romance to Mastodon to Parkway Drive, which is a testament to their ability to cross genres and appeal to all fans of hard rock. KsE have remained a featured attraction at every major North American and European festival through the years. Their headline set at the UK’s Bloodstock Festival in 2024 was a dazzling and ferocious sight to behold.

The band are celebrating an impressive 25-year career as one of the most vital and genre-defining bands of the ’00s and continue their incredible legacy today.
