Hot Mulligan, one of Emo’s brightest stars is back with their blend of Mid-West Emo and Pop-Punk in their 3rd studio album entitled Why Would I Watch. After the overwhelming success of 2020’s, You’ll Be Fine, fans will not be disappointed with the latest release.
Upon starting the album, Shouldn’t Have A Leg Hole But I Do quickly sets the tone as the band’s base sound is as strong as ever, with the elements of Math-Rock that flood the melancholic emo soundscapes. These sounds flow seamlessly from track to track with the likes of It’s A Family Movie She Hates Her Dad and track three And I Smoke, which also brings in some great atmosphere with the building riffs towards the end of the track.
This Song Is Called Its Called What Its Called brings the angst as the bands Mid-West emo influences start to shine through incredibly strongly, as well as in No Shoes In The Coffee Shop (Or Socks) and Christ Alive My Toe Dammit Hurts, as well as more elements of Math-Core with disjointed guitar licks accompanying the simplistic yet catchy riffs.
To save some surprises, the last track I’ll talk about is my personal favourite from the album, Shhhh! Golf is On. Every musical element and angst lyrical theme that makes Hot Mulligan so damn exciting is here and turned up to 11. From Angsty lyrics, fantastic musicianship and the best vocal performance on the album, this song is a perfect introduction to one of Emo’s most exciting bands.
If you’re a fan of Mid-West Emo, Pop-Punk or Math-Rock then I honestly cannot recommend this album enough. From start to finish, the album sounds fresh, heartfelt, and an incredibly strong contender for my album of the year. Listen to this album. That simple.
