Funeral Vomit // Upheaval Of Necromancy // Album Review

Colombia’s death metal goliath, Funeral Vomit, have returned with their most bludgeoning & brutal album to date.

Formed in 2020 during the pandemic, Funeral Vomit are like a death metal assault to the senses. Blending elements of classic OSDM like Autopsy & Grave with the more dark bestial sound from Blasphemy & Grave Desecrator.

The band’s last album, “Monumental Putrescence,” released by XTREEM MUSIC, was their most barbaric & punishing yet. Putting them on the map for one of the best new bands within the underground death metal scene.

This year’s “UPHEAVAL OF NECROMANCY” might not just be their best album yet; it might just be the most brutal of 2025.

Starting off the album in the darkest & ominous way, “Intro (The Disentombment)” is a thumping industrial track. Giving you a feeling that this track would be the theme for the serial killer in a David Fincher thriller. Filling you with dread & drawing you in even more. “Upheaval of Necromancy” perfectly follows & continues the intensity.

The band is in top form. The raw but powerful sound they have captured comes through straight away. J. Carvajal’s drums sound like a shotgun blast; they are so thunderous in sound & feel. The guitar sound from Y. Lopez &
C. Monsalve on this track is a perfect blend of that gritty, fuzzed-out chainsaw sound, but when they tremolo riff it’s clear & precise. Giving that harsh black metal-leaning sound.

With a fantastic David Cronenberg’s “The Fly” sample as an intro “Sulphuric Regurgitation” turns the speed up & is a great blasting track. Going from bombstyle blasting to a great chugging speed this track really plays around with song writing & keeps you engaged. The soaring lead section on this track by Lopez is phenomenal. Adds a great texture to the track.

Getting the award for the heaviest track & my personal favourite on the album is “Hematophagia”. Just by the opening riffs alone this song is like a mammoth. With a big death doom feel, the songs opening solo riffs like a juggernaut in size. As the whole band comes in they keep the momentum going & really build on it for a few passes. Before putting the pedal on the gas & speeding things up. But it still maintains that heavy feel they opened the track with. The bridge section on this track too is just superb.

A track later in the album “Altars of Doom” really showcases two other outstanding strings to Funeral Vomit’s brutal bow. Vocalist / Guitarist C. Monsalve & bassist. H. Montaño. Firstly, Monsalve’s performance on this album might be some of my favourite in the past few years within the death metal genre.

His guttural tones are just one level through the album. They have different tonality throughout & gives lots of texture to each track. A real mix of deep lows & some anguishing yells really give the album that stand out factor. As for bassist H. Montaño, his performance on the album might be understated but his tone & presence is really felt throughout. Giving this thick back bone to the album that really thickens out the overall sound & which helps the album feel like a jackhammer to the ear drums.

“Upheaval Of Necromancy” is a sublime album. Bringing together multiple subgenres of death metal together to create a simple but punitive sound of the most harsh & monolithic brutality. Each album Funeral Vomit has been able to turn things up a gear & really improve their sound without changing it & just progressing overall as a band. It’s one of the most brutal albums on the year without having to be flashy or use a load of studio tricks. It’s what I want most from modern death metal. Stripped back, raw & unforgiving with its savagery.
