Exodus // Goliath // Album Review

10

After nearly five years, Exodus unleashed their latest offering, “Goliath”. By name and nature, this is a Goliath. Rob Dukes’ return to the fold has added some extra spice, making it sound heavier than ever before. This is another Exodus masterpiece.

The opening salvo from “3111” gives you an inkling of what to come and when the track drops it is in typical Exodus fashion; fast, aggressive and with Dukes back on vocals there is an added menace to their sound, the guitar work from Holt and Altus is amazing as they trade riffs while Hunting’s drums and Gibson’s bass make for a monumental low end that reverberates through your brain, a big opening that sets the bar for the album.

The opening of “Hostis Humani Generis” gets you amped up even before the track takes full flight but when it does you’d want to strap in as it is a whirlwind of cutting riffs, thumping bass lines, savage vocals and a drum beat from Hunting that leaves you in a heap not to mention the killer solo, when these guys go they go and it is a joy to behold. The slightly experimental sounding “The Changing Me” is a brilliant track from start to finish, whether it be the melodic opening riffs to the cutting ones that follow to the monster drum and bass beat to the guest vocal from Hypocrisy frontman Peter Tagtgren to Dukes own savage vocals and then you have the ripper solo from Holt, this has it all and is one of the best tracks on the album. “Promise You This” is pure old school Exodus with more than a hint of Pantera’s groove, fast and frantic with driving riffs and a pummeling drum beat, Dukes adds to the intensity with his snarling vocals but the one thing that stands out is the monster groove that runs throughout it is insane and as for the solo, simply mind blowing, a killer track.

The Title track “Goliath” is downtuned and slower, giving off a seriously ominous vibe with Duke’s accentuating that feeling with his fear-instilling vocals, and when you throw in a slow, eerie violin, it seems to ratchet that onerous feeling even more, a nice change of pace and power. “Beyond The Event Horizon” brings the tempo right back up with its breakneck speed in the form of a relentless drum beat and thunderous bass line which combined with the chugging riffs from Holt and Altus adding to the ferocity while pushing the track along, as does the searing solo that scorches the fretboard, while Dukes spits out his lyrics with venom, another cracking tune. “2 Minutes Of Hate” is a banger; aggressive and in your face, Dukes is at his snarling best as chaos reigns around him, a couple of tasty solos are the only sunshine on this brilliantly nasty little number. “Violence Works” takes the speed levels down a little while whacking up the groove, a kicking rhythm set up by Hunting and Gibson’s massive low end allows Holt and Altus to shred with thick heavy riffs and killer solos, one of the best tracks on the album because even after forty odd years these guys are still not adverse to experimenting with their sound and producing a cracker like this. “Summon Of The God Unknown” keeps it slow but with a heavier beat from Hunting and Gibson that builds the track up, Holt and Altus take over midway through and completely melt your face in the shape of a twin guitar assault that leaves you speechless to the backdrop of Dukes roars and a stomping low end, another example of these guys not being afraid to expand their musical boundaries.

“The Dirtiest Of The Dozen” closes the album in true Exodus fashion, a million miles an hour, balls out no fucks given, this is their bread and butter, this is what brought them to the table, made them one of the forefathers and standard bearers for thrash metal over the last forty odd years, long may it last.
