DeWolff // Muscle Shoals // Album Review

8

The Dutch sensation DeWolff returns this December 6th with their latest offering Muscle Shoals courtesy of Mascot Records. I have to admit I have loved everything DeWolff have thrown at us over the last few years, they are a band that captures the imagination musically every time I listen to them, maybe because they are so out of my wheelhouse normally, or maybe because they just are that good!

Either way, I’ll not complain at all, their latest offering is once again a soulful collection of tracks that seem to transport you away from the daily grind and off into a sonic free-for-all that will have you shaking your tush immediately. Like a musical time machine, you will be transported into a sonic vortex that is unlike anything else in 2024. The guys somehow bring a classic vibe right up to date with a glorious collection of songs that capture the imagination, make your mind wander and help you shake off that mortal coil even for a little while.

The musicality is sublime; you can lose yourself in the glorious Hammond organ, bellowing out hefty chords behind the funky and loose songwriting style that just oozes its ethereal quality, whimsical vocals and psychedelic vibes. I honestly don’t know where it all comes from; it is so far removed from the music I usually envelop myself in that I honestly cannot figure out where these guys pull their inspiration from, No doubt, the classics, grassroots RNB and Soul, sing-songwriters from the 60’s and 70’s who walked the walk and talked the talk. Somehow they have created a vibe all their own that is as glorious as the bands who paved the way for them, what’s not to love? We all need a reminder once in a while of a band who makes us step outside our comfort zone and challenge us after all we are all guilty of getting complacent at some time or another and this could very well be the kick-up the ass you need to fall in love with a new band (to you) all over again.

DeWolff deserves to be that band; these guys are like a sprinkle of magic in a world full of cookie-cutter bands.

Muscle Shoals lands December 6th via Mascot Records.

Be there or be square.
