Fresh-faced trio DELLA NOVA releases their self-titled debut album on Friday the 13th of December, unlucky for some but not for these guys because as debuts go this is right up there.
The sound they have created is unreal and belies that of a three-piece; loud, brash and most importantly enthralling. The opener “Wachasay” is a statement of intent, no hanging around with fancy intros just straight to the point, Bowmer’s vocals are class being a mixture of raw power with a bit of restraint while the rhythm section of Chauncy’s bass and Szabo’s drums is imposing giving the impression that the band is bigger than a three-piece, midway through Bowmer lays down a funky little solo that is understated but seriously impressive.
The slow languid opening of “You Know” draws you in with its mesmerising rhythm as Bowmer croons along similarly, the tempo gradually builds throughout reaching a frenetic peak at the back end of the track with the bass and guitar trading cool riffs as it plays out. The guitar instrumental “We Need A Way Out” leads into “Stand Up”; a no muss no fuss fast paced cracker that has an infectious groove thanks to Chauncy’s mega bass, not to be outdone Szabo hammers out a killer drum beat as Bowmer kinda snarls/sings his way through and not to mention the ripper solo dropped near the end, a savage number. The distortion-filled “Peanut Butter Breath” heralds the arrival of “Gimmie Love” a rocker that packs a nice punch with short sharp distorted riffs and a drum beat that gets the feet stomping, Bowmer sounds a little more gritty vocally adding an edgier feel to it, a great track. “On The Blue” is a sad track full of melancholy with a softly strummed guitar and Bowmer singing mournfully, it finally explodes near the end of the track with a heavy riff and crashing drums before dropping back down for the close.
The drum solo “Erica” eases you into the seven-minute epic that is “Rise With The Wind”, a track that has an angsty feel to it, Bowmer’s vocals are brilliant here as he goes from soft-spoken to full-on roaring with killer riffs, a bouncing bass and a thumping drum beat backing him up giving you the track of the album. The massive sounding “Astral” is amazing and runs “Rise With The Wind” close for track of the album, its stunning soundscape resonates with a booming bass and drum beat as the guitar meanders along nicely in the background, a cracking tune. The album closes with “Welcome Home”, another musical interlude that has all the instruments combined to give an atmospheric ending.
While this is a fantastic album the one thing that gets me is that there are too many interludes that would be better served as intros to tracks or being left out altogether, maybe it’s just me but they feel like wasted space, regardless it is a cracker of aadebut album and I look forward to hearing more from these guys soon
