Dublin-based Cell Games are set to release their debut EP “You Have NOT Heard These Songs” on the 12th of December, and it is impressive.
The blistering four-track EP sets the standard for the new wave of Nu Metal, refining and redefining the genre to something that you can sink your teeth into. The EP opens with “Lament Configuration”, a monster that greets you with a wall of sound in the shape of thunderous drums and a kicking bass line courtesy of O’Carroll and O’Brien, respectively, setting the track up nicely. At the same time, Caroll’s killer guitar work and equally impressive electro beats give Foy the ultimate platform to let rip vocally, changing it up from a rap style to downright metal, a mesmerising opener.
“Let’s Go To Therapy” is an absolute banger, the bass line and electro pulse at the start is deadly, but it’s the rhythm from the guitars and machine gun style drumming that really gets you going, alongside Foy’s excellent vocals, which range from feral to melodic, nearly Mike Patton melodic when the mood takes, a fantastic track. “Filthyweight” is a downtuned mammoth with a thumping low end. Foy’s vocals are cracking, melodic for the most part, but when needed, he digs down to release a snarling beast. Caroll’s guitars are heavy as fuck, adding to the overall heft of the track, track of the EP without a doubt.
The EP closes with “Relics”, another blistering offering that leaves you breathless; mixing their heavy drum and bass beats and crushing guitar riffs with a funky electro beat that will leave you not knowing whether to mosh or dance add to the mix Foy’s vocals that go from rapperesque to clean to screamed it’s unreal, there is so much going on your head will explode, in a good way.
From start to finish, you cannot fault this EP. Hopefully, this is just a snapshot of what is to come.
