I stumbled across these guys about ten years ago in the Metal Mecca of Dublin, that is, the Sound Cellar, and I have been enthralled since. Their circus theatrics, savage grooves, and all-around killer sound make them essential listening. Each of their albums has gotten better and better, and number ten is no different, albeit slightly different, in that the band have thrown a couple of curveballs in there, and while they feel odd and out of place at first, they quickly become favourites.
The album kicks off with “Tonight We Must Be Warriors” to the back drop off a marching beat with Eckerstrom leading the way with spoken vocals before the band kick in to a massive fan fare of horns, drums and great riffs in a power metal frenzy, airy chorus’ and a rousing guitar solo push the track over the top, an outstanding way to start proceedings, catchy is an understatement as you will be humming this for days on end. Next up is “In The Airwaves” which is a significant turnaround from the previous track in a sound that is more familiar with fans as they dive back into their death metal stylings and add a touch of metalcore with the more melodious chorus’, the beat created by Alfredsson on the drums combined with Sandelin’s monster bass line is insane and really drives the track, Ohrstrom weighs in with another brilliant solo towards the back end of the track to add a little extra to a great track.
“Captain Goat” is a slow doom ridden track sounding like an old sea shanty will the band chanting the chorus line, this is by far one of the oddest offerings to date from the band but let me tell you it is also one of their best, this grows on you like a limpet and you will be singing the chorus by the end of it guaranteed. Title track “Don’t Go In The Forest” is a bass lead groove monster that once again sees the band change things up with a more straight forward rock banger; from Sandelin and Alfredsson’s booming low end to Jarlsby and Ohrstrom’s masterful riffery to Eckerstrom’s cracking vocals this is equal parts dark and melodic, this is possibly the best track on the album and will be amazing live. “Death And Glitz” brings the cuckoo back with another groover’s dream courtesy of Sandelin’s savage bass line and some funky riffage from Jarlsby and Ohrstrom. Eckerstrom is at his finest, seamlessly switching between clean and screamed vocals; this one is a real earworm. “Abduction Song” hits like a sledgehammer as Alfredsson lays down a brutal drum beat, reminding everyone that these guys pack a serious punch, ably assisted by some cutting riffs and an equally heavy bass line. Eckerstrom’s trademark guttural roars and high melodic vocals are on another level here, giving the track an extra bit of flair. “Howling At The Waves” is not something you would expect: a piano-driven ballad-style track stripped back, allowing Eckerstrom to give a heartfelt, vulnerable performance —a nice change of pace.
“Dead And Gone And Back Again” is a gem of a track that has so much packed in that the mind boggles at how they keep track of what they are doing, it grooves, it rocks, it’s dark, it’s melodic, it has another cracking solo from Ohrstrom while the drums and bass are off the wall and Eckerstrom gives a masterclass in multiple personality vocals, screamed, guttural, clean and melodic; it’s all there and combined it gives you one hell of a track, although you may not know whether you are coming or going for the most part, you will love it. “Take This Heart And Burn It” is vintage Avatar, with their quirky blend of heavy, dark brutality and lighter melodic sides, giving you pure calming chaos — and the reason we love these guys.
The album closes with “Magic Lantern” a hypnotic cross of electro and metal, starting out with a wah pedal riff and keyboard combo as Eckerstrom goes at it easy with restrained, for him, vocals for the most part, the wah pedal riff is present throughout and gives an eerie atmospheric vibe as does the solo, a weird and fantastic way to cap a truly brilliant album.
Avartar never cease to amaze and astound with each new album, and this is no different.
