Mork // Monolitt // Album Review

9

Created in Halden, Norway by Thomas Eriksen as a side project in 2004, it took 9 years until the debut album was released and then the band have been rising to the top of Norwegian Black Metal and pushing to be one of the best worldwide.

This is now my fourth Mork review, and they are a band I always keep an ear out for and end up pulling out my wallet to buy their records – such is the quality of the music.

The last album Syv was released in 2024 and led to the band touring the Far East and Australia – but now is the time for Mork to push on, expand some and explore a little wider but still within that Black Metal arena.

The album itself is 9 tracks long and opens with ‘Under Vekten Av Verden’, which, if you haven’t heard Mork before, will leave you under no illusions as to what to expect for the rest of the album. With high-intensity scything guitars and a punishing drum show, topped off by a glorious Black Metal vocal, I am swiftly reminded why my record collection includes a number of Mork albums. It feels so good to have them back.

That feeling doesn’t shift as the album progresses and we explore some deep and atmospheric areas of the band’s mind, and as you navigate this occasionally newer aspect of Mork, it feels exactly where you should be and what you should be listening to. That vice through the murkiness and noise is exactly the one that many would fear, but I follow.

There are some aspects of Black ‘n’ Roll found on the album, but I am more than happy with that, Mork have always had their own sound to Black Metal and I think that’s why I’ve always been a fan – it is stunning music but also something that can get played over and over again – which isn’t always the case for me and the genre.

There is no doubt that Monolitt will be on my turntable soon, taking pride of place next to the previous Mork releases, and should make itself comfortable as it will be there for some time. What can be better than Black Metal with riffs, grit, despair and atmosphere? I don’t think that there is anything.

Another stunning release by Mork – one I would recommend to any fan of the darker, moodier side.

Monolitt will be released on Friday, 19th June 2026 via Peaceful.
