Lynch Mob // Dancing With The Devil // Album Review

10

The final chapter in the long storied history of Lynch Mob, starting out in 1989 and working through the 90s and 00s with breaks here and there, the music created by George Lynch and Co. in all their iterations has stood the test of time, and I, for one, will be sad to see them go.

That being said, if this is to prove the final farewell, Lynch has dug deep to give you one hell of a swan song. The album starts with the title track “Dancing With The Devil”; a roaring rocker that is instantly recognisable with Lynch Mob’s trademark dirty riffs and thumping rhythm, having retained the line up from 23’s “Bablyon” the band have been able to keep some continuity and Colón is a real focal point with his strong raspy vocals a real throw back to the early material, while Lynch’s guitar work as always is fantastic, if ever there was a way to open a farewell album this is it. “Pictures Of The Dead” is up next with is monster chugging riffs and booming bass and drum beat. Colón once more slays with his vocals as he runs the range, Gulino’s bass underpins the track, setting it up with a cool rumbling riff as Lynch shreds big time, a gritty track that is one of the standouts on the album.

“Saints And Sinners” is a brilliant track with a drum beat that drives the track, allowing Lynch to tear it up, whether it be his cutting riffs or magical solo, Colón gives his best Rob Halford impression on the high notes, as a matter of fact the track has a touch of Priest to it and it is excellent, another powerful track. “Lift Up Your Soul” blends the band’s legendary hard rock and blues styles. Colón’s languid vocals are perfect for this slower, meandering track, which features Lynch dropping groovy riffs and a stellar solo. Gulino’s bass is deftly delivered and so subtle, while D’Anda’s hammering drum beat is at the heart of this one, a real gem. “Love In Denial” is a bluesy track with a monster groove; the rhythm from Gulino and D’Anda is savage, allowing Lynch to do what he does best: shred. Colón’s vocals are classy and add a little dirty vibe, making it a cracking track.

“Machine Bone” is another groover with a genuine heavy beat courtesy of Gulino’s booming bass and D’Anda’s thunderous drum beat. Colón’s vocals are a little grittier. At the same time, Lynch’s riffs are sharp as hell, and the solo is a blues rock mash-up that is phenomenal, all before making way for Gulino to throw down his own killer solo, a dirty little number that is great. “Follow Me Down” picks the pace up with a nice kicking rhythm, Colón lets rip with a more forceful vocal style while Lynch’s finger dance up and down the fret board like nobody’s business and as for his solo, it’s exceptional, plain and simple, there is an authentic old style Lynch Mob sound to this one and it’s deadly.

“Golden Mirror” is a classy instrumental that lets the band stretch their legs in ways they wouldn’t otherwise. “Sea Of Stones” is a downtuned doom-style track, slow and laborious, with big, echoey riffs and a thumping bassline that drives it, a dark side of the band rarely heard, and it is magnificent. “The Stranger” is a slow number that is not quite a ballad. Still, not far off it, built of a heavy drum beat and Colón’s immense vocals the track builds to rousing chorus’ of the back of lamenting verses’, Lynch’s solo is a out of this world and a real exclamation point on this one, this is one of the best, if not the best track on the album, it takes a listen or two to appreciate it fully. The album closes with the bonus track “Somewhere”, with their trademark riffery. The track is like a mash-up of all the band’s styles and albums through the years, and if this is to be the end, then this is a fitting way to do it.
