Fitzroy Holt excels at songs which take the raw introspection of folk storytelling with the ragged energy of grit, noise and energy to create a bluesy, scuzzy rock sound that will speak to fans of The Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Kills and Rival Sons. As demonstrated at shows as guest to The Libertines, Jake Bugg, The K’s and Madison McFerrin, he goes harder still on-stage, moving from tender, stripped-down confessionals to sheer chaos in the blink of an eye – an unpredictability that comes from his Black Country roots.
Now Fitzroy Holt lays the foundations for a big 2026 to come as he shares the new single ‘Around The Wrekin’. It’s his first release under a new deal with 25 Hour Convenience Store, the label founded by Gary Powell of The Libertines.
‘Around The Wrekin’ is a statement of intent from Fitzroy, his urgent vocal delivery topping a raging maelstrom of stoner rock riffage, manic punk rhythms and full-on intensity. The title comes from a local saying meaning to take the long way around, and that’s representative of his story so far: playing any venues that will have him, honing his craft via the road weary grind of endless touring, maintaining his artistic integrity despite his outsider status, all the while hurtling at 100mph towards whatever comes next.
‘Around The Wrekin’ was solely written by Fitzroy, and he co-produced the track with Mark Gittins.
Fitzroy Holt grew up in Dudley, and the town’s modest, working class roots and local music history feed into everything he creates. His songs reflect real life: childhood memories, reflections on his heritage, the chaos of addiction, the hope that comes with love. They might be whispered or they might be screamed, but they’re always restless purges of his inner turmoil.
His handful of single releases to date have taken him to bigger stages, from The Isle of Wight to The Great Escape, while also earning support from BBC Introducing and BBC Radio London but ‘Around The Wrekin’ feels like both a landmark and a fresh start – the sound of an artist who has put in the years, mastered his voice, and is now fuelled by the promise of what comes next. Expect more new music soon.
