Conjurer // Unself // Album Review

9

As soon as Conjurer released their debut album Mire in 2018, the band started making serious waves, and then when Páthos landed in 2022, many more turned their heads towards one of the most exciting British bands.

Now, as the third album is about to be unleashed, the band have looked back on themselves as they evolve further, with more intensity, along with helping vocalist/guitarist Dani Nightingale navigate being non-binary as well as being diagnosed with autism at the age of 31.

This openness and vulnerability is evident from the start of the album as you may wonder how far Conjurer have evolved, however this stripped back beginning soon takes a turn for the dark and sinister as Conjurer fire up the heaviness.

As the album progresses, the band show exactly why they gained such traction from the first two albums and garnered such massive support with a post metal feeling to the darkness as the guitars scythe through hugely imposing drums and the dual vocals flow between a Black Metal gravelly sound alongside a cleaner narration.

The band have mastered the art of suspense, pausing to let the impending doomy tension build until it tips over the edge and collides with your ear canals.

The album itself is 9 tracks that span 49 minutes and sounds incredible from start to finish. The release flows back and forth with many a high and even more lows, but not in a bad way – in a very gloomy but heavy metal way – the kind we all love to listen to in a dingy gig or at home with no distractions and no light.

It is without doubt that Conjurer have used the album to not only allow an exploration through uncertainty but also as a support and coping strategy not just for those immediately involved in the band but also for anyone who can relate.

Whilst people who may drop in and out of this genre may feel that the sound is very despondent and downtrodden, this show of community and connection will be hear very loudly by a huge community of people and the ripple effect will be huge – touching more people than the band probably could ever imagine.

Musically the band have created a masterpiece that ticks all boxes and more and will continue the trajectory up the festival poster and to the upper echelons of their sound.

Unself will be released Friday 24th October 2025 via Nuclear Blast Records.
