Buckcherry // Roar Like Thunder // Album Review

9

Buckcherry are back with album number eleven, and while they may not be reinventing the wheel, they are sure as hell keeping rock n roll alive with their raw and raucous energy.

Opening with the title track “Roar like Thunder”, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re listening to AC/DC back in the Bon Scott glory days with its crunching riffs and thumping drums, its full-throttle, balls-out rock, and its brilliance. Coming in hot on its heels is “When The Sun Goes Down” with its punk rock attitude, driven by searing guitars with a cool drum and bass combo, add in a snarling Todd, and you’ve got a killer track. “Come On” is one big rock n roll track, built off Ruiz’s massive drums and Le Mieux’s monster bass with some sweet guitar work from Dacanay and Rowe, and Todd killing it on vocals, you don’t get much more rock n roll than this.

“Talkin’ Bout Sex” is the go-to jive for these guys, the epitome of dirty rock n roll with its scratchy riffs to complement Todd’s vocals and a booming low end, a great little number. “Blackout” is a throwback with a funky vibe, the rhythm is infectious, while the guitars are brilliant, don’t ask me why, but it reminds me of Love/Hate’s monster single “Blackout In The Red Room”, and it’s awesome. The bluesy riff that opens “I Go Boom” is just to lure you in before it explodes with its kicking drum beat and crushing riffs, Todd’s vocals are on point but there real kicker here is the horns that are in the background, not very rock n roll but they work a treat alongside the ripper guitar solos. “Set It Free” is a little slower with a bluesy riff, lazy drum beat with Todd crooning along, it’s a slow burner but a cracker with a chilled out vibe.

“Hello Goodbye” is a laid back toe tapper with some great guitar work from Dacanay and Rowe built off Ruiz’s solid drums and Le Mieux’s subtle bass line. Todd’s silky vocals are brilliant on a real standout track. “Machine Gun” brings all the swagger; with its buzzing bass and crashing drums, it sets up nicely, the crunching riffs and raspy vocals give you a downright rock n roll monster with an AC/DC touch. The high intensity “Let It Burn” closes out the album much like it opened, in a whirlwind of drums, bass and guitars as Todd roars his way through to the final, leaving you breathless and wanting more.

Long Live Rock N Roll!
