The purveyors of putrid death doon Autopsy have returned with another slab of gore-soaked filth!
Following last year’s blistering release of “Morbidity Triumphant”, “Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts” their latest effort yet again showcases Autopsy’s perfect brand of horror-filled death metal.
For the uninitiated Autopsy is one of the longest-running death metal acts active today. Formed in 1987 the band have released some of the most prolific albums within the death metal genre & carved out their own niece sound during the early days of death metal.
Mixing elements of doom metal, grindcore & hard punk the band quickly helped make the biggest subgenres today with “death doom”.
Autopsy have a unique style & throughout the years they have been able to deliver some of the most consistent albums within the death doom style.
“Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts” is the next chapter in the band’s cauldron of filth.
Featuring elven tracks of unrelenting, putrid & chaotic music that perfectly embodies their disgusting mantra.
Opening track “Rabid Funeral” goes for the jugular in perfect Autopsy fashion. Fast paced, almost out of control & frenetic. Filled with crazy riffing from guitarist’s Eric Cutler & Danny Coralles. The kind of guitar riffs that would give you a brain aneurysm if you tried to learn it. Yes it’s that mental.
As the track closes out the band brings things down & slows down the pace. A reverb drenched lead guitar shreds over a hypnotic bass track by Greg Wilkinson. A solid & signature opener from the band.
Third track “No Mortal Left Alive” opens in the most depraved way. A thumping opening which leads into chugging punk fury. A very catchy but simple riff keeps your ears glued to the guitars & they really pull you along for the ride.
Chris Reifert’s simple yet effective drumming really helps this track keep its bulldozer-like quality right until the tracks end. Also the use of his signature vocal style on this track really showcases his talent for perfectly matching the tracks intensity. Using more gutturals for the slow & heavy sections, then merging to higher, more frantic moments as the track intensifies.
Title track “Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts” offers us something different from the band. Feeling like a great mix of traditional rock influenced doom the track opens with a great section that slowly bleeds more & more into an Autopsy style track & at the perfect the band unleash & let the pandemonium begin. Ramping things up this track has some of the most scorching fast sections on the album so far. This one feels like a title track & aptly deserves its title.
One of Autopsy’s strengths on their last few releases has been the perfect balance in the mixing & mastering of the albums. Recorded by Scott Evans and Greg Wilkinson at Sharkbite Studios with additional tracking at Earhammer Studios by Greg Wilkinson and was mixed by Greg Wilkinson and mastered by Ken Lee. This team on “Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts” really captures the band’s sound.
Allowing the group to keep their very raw primal sound but also being clear enough to make every element shine. One of my favourite things since Wilkinson joining the band is hearing his thunderous bass tone punch through & have its own place. With guitar tone having its own space & creating this great relationship that separately stand out but together create this solid & remarkable backbone to the bands overall sound.
As the album draws to its end, closer “Coagulation” still has the impact the rest of the album holds. Autopsy always ends a record with a great closer track as this is no expectation. Feeling like one of the slowest & more doom filled tracks on the album, the track still has its moments when it picks up but it still keeps this great thread throughout. Slowly building in its titan like stature.
Autopsy is truly in a league of their own. Being able to consistently each year have such monumental output is a big feat. “Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts” is another fantastic chapter in the band’s ongoing legacy.
Giving you exactly what you want from Autopsy but still keeping the audience excited with new and interesting moments sprinkled throughout.
A phenomenal release from such a prolific band that has no signs of slowing down!

About Autopsy
One of the longest running death metal acts active today, and an inspiration for whole generations of depraved metal maniacs the world over, Autopsy formed in 1987 and released four albums on Peaceville Records – beginning with the classic debut ‘Severed Survival’ in 1989 – before disbanding in 1995, with members going on to form the equally disturbed Abscess. Autopsy officially returned after a fifteen year hiatus with the 2010 EP, ‘The Tomb Within’, followed closely by their fifth studio album, ‘Macabre Eternal’ in 2011, which set them on a new bloodthirsty trail, with the reinvigorated intent of creating more of the sickest and most twisted & uncompromising music ever to grace a turntable. The band has remained prolific ever since.
