Cape Town’s We Kill Cowboys are back in a big way with their fantastic new EP “Back From The Dead” the follow-up to 2024’s “RIP” and sees Alex Muller step up to the mic, leaving the guitar behind for Floris Le Roux, coming in as the second guitarist, adding an extra dimension to the band’s sound. “
Dig Deep” gets the EP underway with its melancholic riff and melodic vocals slowly building into an absolute monster with cutting riffs and pummeling drum beat, Muller’s gritty punk style vocals suit this transformation perfectly, the chorus’ gives you a chance to catch your breath while marvelling at Muller’s powerful vocals and the bands ability to switch it up from heavy to melodic with ease, what a way to start. “Cherry Lips” bursts into life in a hail of riffs and drums as Muller comes screaming in. The groovy rhythm that drives the track is insane, but it is the heavy back end that really hammers the nail home—killer tune. The punchy “Android” is a lot less frantic than the previous track but still as hard-hitting, more melodic vocally, all to the backdrop of gnarly riffs and thunderous drums that add a darker edge to the tune, another banger.
“Burn The Witch” is an instant favourite, the bass line that drives this one is crazy, you can nearly feel the vibrations from the buzzing strings, and when combined with the funky riffs and killer drum beat it is off the chain. Muller’s vocals are class on this one, probably the best track on the EP. “Sweat And Blood” builds slowly with intent; once again, the bass is phenomenal, the guitars are savage. At the same time, Muller’s vocals are immense, and the way the band change things up within the track is next level, one minute it’s melodic and restrained, next thing it’s straining at the leash to go full throttle, a cracking track. The EP closes much like it opened with “Dead End”, a kicking number that sees the band dialling it up to ten and going balls to the wall; an incessant drum beat leads the way with crunching riffs and a slapping bass line as Muller gives it all with her gritty screaming vocals, although there is a slight reprieve towards the end but that is only to set you up for the final gut punch as the band go all out with a sonic attack.
This is some of the best music you will hear all year, hopefully a full length album is in the offing soon.
