Welsh wizards Those Damn Crows are back with their latest offering “God Shaped Hole”, a masterful album that has ten great tracks that will appeal to the masses. “

Dancing With The Enemy” opens the album with a statement of intent, a killer drum and guitar riff get us underway before Greenhall comes in over the them with his distinctive tone before the track goes off with thumping drum beat some crunching riff and cool melodies as the rest of the band join in, such a catchy tune you will be humming it from the first listen. “Glass Heart” continues in a similar vein with uplifting verses and soaring chorus’, Greenhall’s raspy vocals are on point and the rhythm created by the drums and bass is killer, one of the standouts on the album. “Fake” is a real turn about from the previous tracks, a darker edgier feel to it with low ominous vocals and a harsher style to the guitars and drums, it sounds odd on the first listen for these guys to produce something like this but believe you me this one grows on you, the symphonic element to it near the end is brilliant and just adds to the overall vibe, a cracking track. “Dreaming” is a ballad-style track that could as easily come from the late 80’s, early 90’s, soft vocals through the verses which quickly soar once the chorus hits, the guitar work of both Thomas and Winchurch is amazing and adds to the nostalgic feel of the track. “Let’s Go Psycho!” brings the heavy with pounding drums and gritty riffs, which are matched only by Greenhall’s vocals, a real gut punch.

The bass heavy opening to “No Surrender” is crazy and sets the track up nicely, the up and down between the verses and chorus’ is cool where Greenhall goes from quiet soft vocals to gritty backed up by crunching riffs and thumping drums but it’s Woods’s thunderous bass line that steals the show. The folksy meanderings of “The Night Train” lure you in as Greenhall’s dulcet tones keep you there, the laid back atmosphere of this one, acoustic guitars and softer drumming, will have you drifting off in your little dream, another fantastic track. The heavy chugging beat of “Turn It Around” will rattle the brain in your skull, the kicking rhythm defies you to stay still, but it’s the chorus that makes the track pop; soaring with crushing melodies and insanely catchy, a monster track with a big sound. The short sharp shock that is “Spit & Choke” will leave you breathless, aggressive and punchy with a slapping bass line from Woods that underpins the whole thing, what more can you ask for. The album closes with the impressive “Still”, a stripped back track that has a raspy Greenhall laying it all out with a softly strummed acoustic and a symphonic accompaniment at the backend of the track, a phenomenal end to a quite amazing album.

“God Shaped Hole” is out on the 11th of April via long-time label home Earache Records, you will be hard pushed to find a better album all year.
