The July Crowd confront family trauma with “Like Home”
The July Crowd have unveiled a new music video for their reflective, heart-on-sleeve single “Like Home”.

The emo-laced anthem is the lead single from the band’s new EP The Way That I Felt Last Year, out now on Manic Kat Records.

The Alberta trio merge a sharp hybrid of driving guitars and emotive lyricism on the track, a nod to their pop-punk roots, while showcasing the band’s growth and sonic evolution. That evolution has been born from a willingness to let their personal lives ebb firmly into their songwriting, something they’d protected against until this point.

Lead vocalist Dom Walters shares: “The few past few difficult years have created something much more cathartic, emotional, and expressive in The July Crowd. I’ve been writing songs because they help me work through major events in my life. This time around, on “Like Home”, I’ve been able to work through something I’ve been suppressing for a while now. Maybe others can find comfort, solace, or understanding in growing up in, or living in, a broken home.”

Speaking on the EP, Walters continues: “This new EP is a reflection of some of the hardest times I’ve ever experienced in my life. Loss, grief, and learning how to cope are all present and very trying themes. Truthfully though, it feels great to write about real experiences. I hope to connect with people in a meaningful way through this record. We made this EP for people working through real human emotions.”

2021 debut EP Roses & Adderall showed the trio’s potential, but it was 2023 effort Seat of Your Pants that clarified The July Crowd’s status as a must watch breakout band in the scene. The sophomore collection showcased a potent and infectious soundscape, with driving guitars and catchy choruses underpinning the Canadian trio’s early sound.

The band’s subsequent singles continued to develop and refine their direction, seamlessly sprinkling introspective emo tones on on their pop glazed punk rock. Crowd pleasers like “Complicated” and “Happy Ever (Afterthought)” would propel the trio into the speakers of alternative fans across North America and beyond.

Fans of Knuckle Puck, Hot Mulligan and Real Friends will be enchanted by The July Crowd’s soundscape on The Way That I Felt Last Year. The band have graduated from the infectious pop punk anthems of their previous cycles to a sound rich in heart and sonically resonating. The poignant song writing of “Like Home”, the thunderous guitars of “Photosynthesis” and the anthemic emo-laced “One of These Days” are windows into the soul of the rejuvenated trio.

The Way That I Felt Last Year is a collection that innately takes the listener back to the 2010’s, whilst bottling a fresh and progressive take on modern alternative.
