Spielbergs are today announcing news of their new album, Vestli, and sharing a double A-side single release, “When They Come For Me” / “Get Lost”. Vestli – out Aug 19th via new label home Big Scary Monsters – is the follow-up to their acclaimed debut album This Is Not The End and sees them unite once more with producer Tord Øverland-Knutsen.
As Spielbergs fast-established themselves as a refuge for like-minds, people seeking a place to hear something they recognised in themselves, their wielding of a sound that melded indie-rock, post-rock, punk and echoes of 90’s emo, resonated far beyond their native Oslo. Their music existed as a way to escape, a place to get lost within, so with Vestli coming into view it might be a surprise to hear the band focussing their attentions on feelings of being trapped. That trapping could be by geography or by emotion but either way, the songs that make up Vestli carve a path paved made of doubt, isolation, and fear. Of new offering “When They Come For Me”, singer and guitarist Mads Baklien says: “Sometimes I feel like I am right on the verge of going crazy. It’s like I don’t recognise myself in what I say and do. And sometimes I feel like one day, inevitably everything will come crashing down.”
Continuing about the new album, he says: “The songs on Vestli are all more or less about a feeling that there is no way to go. No escape. You are dealing with issues in your mind, regrets, shame, fear, should haves and could haves. No way out. Maybe you don’t like who you are or who you have become. You are stuck with being you. You are dealing with a lot of pressure and noise in your everyday life, and all you want to do sometimes is just to leave everything behind and find a quiet place somewhere to start a new life. But you can’t. You have commitments and responsibilities. You’re going nowhere. And now on top of everything, the entire world seems like an out-of-control aeroplane with a bunch of f***ing nuts behind the wheel. And there is no way out. You carry the place you grew up inside you your whole life, for good or bad. Vestli is the name of the suburban borough in the north-eastern part of Oslo where both Stian and I grew up. You can leave Vestli but Vestli never leaves you.”

Praise for Spielbergs
“Anthemic songs that assert both urgency and aptitude” – Alt Press
“An amazing band” – Dan P Carter, BBC Radio 1
“Oslo’s Spielbergs have gained more than a few comparisons to Japandroids, and if you like that band’s raw, celebratory indie-punk, you might dig these guys too.” – Brooklyn Vegan
“Guitars drill down at all angles, while the pummelling percussion sounds like a cement mixer trying to chew up a steel beam.” – CLASH
“Pummeling yet melodic guitars batter you round the heart with nary a pause for breath… Full of huge, lung-busting, shouting-into-the-wind vocals and relentless drums, guitars and everything else, cheerily-titled new single ‘We Are All Going To Die’ shows little concern for
restraint.” – DIY
“An alt-rock banger, ‘We Are All Going To Die’ is a lot more fun than it sounds.” – Dork
“a band that match joy and intensity in equal measures.” – The FADER
“It offers the kind of swaggering, punch-drunk escapism we used to spend all our time wishing for in our teenage years, while making it feel utterly achievable even now we’re much older and far more cynical.” – Gold Flake Paint
“Joyfully ragged, emo-esque, power-pop songs.” – The Guardian
“One of the most exciting bands of the year.” – The i Paper
“Fans of fuzzy, propulsive cathartic jams, are about to have a new favourite band.” – Kerrang!
“We Are All Going To Die” is encased in a relentless soundscape of drums and guitars, owing its all-encompassing musicianship to shoegaze that is underpinned by a distinctly emo heart.” – The Line of Best Fit
“They’ve perhaps made the best debut of 2019 so far.” – NME
“A fantastic squeal of feedback.” – NPR Album You Need To Hear
“Physical intensity, gooey emotions, and devotionals that are joyous.” – Pitchfork
“Big, heart-on-sleeve guitar-rock with a go-for-broke anthemic intensity.” – Stereogum
“As debut records go, they don’t get more fist-pumping than this.” – Uproxx
