“The song ‘Break The Ties’ is about cutting away the bad and being in a more together space with everything,” said guitarist Freddy Ordine. “We recorded the song with Logan Maderand we just hit it off. He really brought this West Coast vibe to what we do.”
The Art of War was produced by Logan Mader (Machine Head, Soulfly, Once Human) and combines the crunchy power rifs with the stadium ready choruses that Weapons of Anew have become known for.
Originally hailing from New Jersey, but transplanted to the Tampa Bay area, Weapons of Anew have quickly taken off with the hard rock scene. The group’s debut album, The Collision of Love and Hate, saw them hitting the road opening for Scott Stapp, Alter Bridge, Tesla, and countless others.
Interview with Weapons of Anew guitarist Freddy Ordine:

What can you tell us about the new single  “Break the Ties” and how it came about?
Freddy: It was about breaking away from things that hold people back. Whether it be a place, a mental state, or toxic person and just spreading my wings and being one with myself. This was the first song written for The Art of War.  It came about when Logan Mader (Machine Head, Once Human) hit it off while on tour together. At the time, we were auditioning producers and as a huge fan of early Machine Head material, I invited Logan to spend time at the studio with us. I couldn’t be happier with how this song came together and turned out. It had our New York attitude and Logan’s west coast vibe. We really nailed the direction I wanted to take Weapons in. Logan was just amazing to work with!
Tell us a little bit about recording for the track and the production team you working with….
Freddy: Originally it was recorded at my studio in NJ with Logan Mader. We wanted Logan to do the record originally, but the Machine Head reunion had come up, so the timing just wasn’t on our side. I reached out to Mike Ferretti. He has been around us for a few years and I was super comfortable with him. As much as I loved working with Logan, I’m happy with how the record came out with Mike. It was mixed at my studio in Florida. We had decided after a few different mixers that they just weren’t hitting the mark. We know what we are supposed to sound like. We wanted the energy of us live to come through in the mixes. I had always refused to mix any of our songs with the old lineup. It was just tons of drama! Who couldn’t play their parts. Who came in completely unprepared. Who I’d have to sit hours upon hours fixing. It was exhausting!!! With the new line up, everyone just gets it!! We come in, knock it out and actually enjoy the process together! So when it came up, I said I would love to give it a try! Richie and i sat in the studio for a few hours at a clip and it pretty much just fell into place. I’m very proud of it!!! Hope ya dig it!!
The video has a great live energy to go along with the song. What can you tell us about the video?
Freddy: Florida is so artistic! We met Thomas Crane from Kill Devil Films through the local scene, just networking. Thomas is the furthest thing from just a local guy though. He has done videos for tons of national bands. Saliva, Kamalot, Queensryche. We totally hit it off with him! Horror nut, musician, phenomenal eye, but most importantly, he gets us! We gave him the freedom to film us how he saw or heard each song and his interruption. We have multiple videos shot and finished already with him for the new record.
What can you tell us about the new vocalist for Weapons of Anew and the time in between singers?
Freddy: There really wasn’t much time in-between when we split with the old guys and brought the new people in. When Reno and I moved down here, we were so miserable with the band situation to the point where we knew we had to either we make some changes or walk away from something we loved so much!! Florida is an amazing hot bed of musical, artistic people! It honestly drove Kevin, Reno and I to say let’s go get people who want this as much as we do!! So with in a few weeks we had auditioned a bunch of people and narrowed it down to two.

We met Richie through a mutual friend at the time. Two of the guys were an immediate no way on him!!! But there was something about him and I just kinda knew he was the guy!!! He had only a few days to learn the songs when he first came in. He was a little shy and you could see he was nervous and didn’t really nail it. I called him up and invited him over to say, “Hey, man. I know you are great!!! I dont want you to sound or even be anything like our old singer. Go home, spend sometime really getting them down and come back in, but make them your own!!! Own this shit!!!” And man, when he came in that next time he fucking floored us!!!! Richie is super talented, no ego at all, just a great great person!!! Him and I have gotten very close over the year he has been with us. He is family!

What do you hope fans take away after listening to the song and this upcoming album?
Freddy: Man, I just hope they connect with it! It’s been a long process getting it to this point. With changing half the band, it’s definitely a different sound but it still sounds like us. It’s who we are today! I’ve sent it to a few people we have know in the industry forever and trust their opinions. So far it’s been an overwhelming, “Wow, you guys have grown so much it’s an amazing record! So I’m super flattered anytime I hear that! It makes Reno, Kev and I smile and know we made the best decision for us!
Weapons of Anew would eventually go viral with their cover
of The Chainsmokers “Sick Boy”, which peaked at #25 on Billboard
Active Rock, #18 Billboard Indicator and #27
Mediabase Active Rock. The song has amassed over 1.2
million streams and continues to win over new audiences.
