On their Intrusive Thoughts EP, out today through DAZE, Recollection have crafted four songs that are as dynamic as they are nostalgic. The band blend assertive vocals with undeniable hooks and punchy rhythms with jangly melodies, creating a sound that sits somewhere between hardcore and indie rock. Each track resonates on a different period of life, from “Lost In Translation,” navigating through finding your place in the modern world, to “Turntable” reflecting on memories associated with certain songs. Title track “Intrusive Thoughts” finds vocalist Josh Hynes joined by his wife Cherish in vocal harmony, creating an instant earworm. Closer “Son” serves as the EP’s most urgent and emotional track, acting as a catalyst to not let go of oneself.
Speaking on the EP, Josh shares:
“When you are younger you live your life carrying a chip on your shoulder as a sort of cross to bear. Not to say some of us still don’t carry one to some degree, but as we’ve gotten older we’ve reached a level of security where it feels liberating to show and express different aspects of emotion and vulnerability. The name Recollection was a perfect fit for this band because the songs reflect past life experiences both good and bad that I still look back upon today. I’ve been friends with some of my band mates for over 23 years. We’ve all grown together through the different seasons of our lives, and these songs are a take on that.”
Intrusive Thoughts was produced and mixed by Taylor Young at The Pit with additional tracking by Eric Sauter at Black Heart Sound. The EP is available on CD and vinyl now though DAZE, with the CD including the band’s Vivid Dreams EP remixed and remastered, and can be streamed HERE.
