Razorlight delivered one of the most unexpected resurgences of 2024 as they made a compelling return with their ‘Planet Nowhere’ album. But exorcising the ghosts of their split at the height of their fame certainly wasn’t a quick fix. It’s a story which is now revealed in-depth with the release of the documentary film ‘Fall To Pieces’ on January 31st. The film will be available to rent from iTunes and Amazon in the UK and US, and from Google Play in the UKIrelandUSCanada and Malta.
‘Fall To Pieces’ takes us back to the heady rush of Razorlight’s early days, when their rock ‘n’ roll dreams were realised in the biggest way imaginable. Yet scratch the surface beneath their many triumphs, and Razorlight was a band balancing on the precipice between success and extreme dysfunction – particularly with the fractured relationship between vocalist/guitarist Johnny Borrell and drummer/main co-writer Andy Burrows.
The focal point of the film is the first reunion between the pair in eleven years. What follows is a deeper emotional experience that well-worn tales of rock ‘n’ roll excess. It’s a curiously touching tale of male camaraderie and rivalry, and the duo’s dogged determination to swallow their pride, forget about the past. The challenge was immense: to not only rebuild Razorlight but to also reestablish a friendship that was obliterated along the way.
As we now know, it worked against all odds. ‘Fall To Pieces’ then takes us into their first chapter of the band’s reunion with footage of their 2021 comeback shows alongside fellow classic line-up members Björn Ågren (guitars) and Carl Dalemo (bass) plus touring keyboardist Reni Lane.
‘Fall To Pieces’ was directed by Ben Lowe, whose other credits include films for Fatboy Slim and Kelly Jones of Stereophonics, as well as music videos for Muse and Royal Blood. The film premiered at the 2022 Raindance Film Festival but is only now receiving its first full release.
Johnny Borrell says, “My trust with Andy was at absolute zero so to get that back was really inspiring. That’s never happened before and it made me think a lot about my life, like if I can get my trust back with Andy, I could do it with anybody.”
Andy Burrows adds, “Whilst our relationship hasn’t always been plain sailing, when Johnny and I sit down to write music together, there’s a magic that happens. I’m so grateful to have him and the band back in my life.”
Razorlight ended 2024 by playing a long sold-out ‘Up All Night’ headline show at the O2 Academy Brixton.
