The Gaslight Anthem has released HISTORY BOOKS – SHORT STORIES, a new EP via their own Rich Mahogany Recordings label via Thirty Tigers. The EP was produced by Butch Walker, and collects four exclusive tracks including the band’s anthemic take on Billie Eilish’s 3x RIAA Platinum-certified breakthrough single, “Ocean Eyes” (featuring background vocals by Karina Rykman), as well as a brand new rendition of the longtime fan favorite, “Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts” (featuring background vocals by Emily Wolfe), and stripped-down acoustic performances of “Positive Charge” and “History Books,” the original versions of which can be found on The Gaslight Anthem’s acclaimed 2023 return to action, HISTORY BOOKS.

“We had an idea after we finished recording the album to record some acoustic versions of History Books and Positive Charge,” says Brian Fallon. “Then at the same time, I had been listening to this Billie Eilish song my daughter showed me on the way to school one morning called ‘Ocean Eyes’ and I thought, ‘hey that would be a great song for The Gaslight Anthem to cover.’ I really enjoyed diving into this song and now I am a Billie Eilish fan.

“Then we decided that it was time to update one of our very favorite songs ‘Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts.’ We had been messing with some of the location names to be more current – seems like real estate on Cookman Ave is all office buildings and condos for very very rich people, maybe not the neighbors for me. So we updated a few choice Jersey locations – not to replace the old version, just more of a current look.”

The Gaslight Anthem are currently traveling on an epic EU/UK tour, including two sold-out shows at London’s The Roundhouse and a wide range of top-billed festival appearances into July, including a headline slot at 2000 Trees. The band will return to their home state of New Jersey to join Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Trey Anastasio Band, Norah Jones, and more at Asbury Park’s sold-out Sea.Hear.Now Festival on Sunday, September 15.

The Gaslight Anthem’s sixth full-length and first new album in nearly a decade, HISTORY BOOKS includes such singles as  the heavy-hearted title track, “History Books,” which sees Fallon trading duet vocals with longtime band champion and fellow New Jerseyan Bruce Springsteen, as well as “Spider Bites,” “Autumn,” “Little Fires” (featuring guest vocals from PUP frontman Stefan Babcock), “Positive Charge.” All five tracks are joined by official music videos streaming now on YouTube.

The Gaslight Anthem is: Brian Fallon (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Alex Rosamilia (lead guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion, backing vocals).

PRAISE FOR THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM + HISTORY BOOKS

“A soul-searching, redemptive and worthy return…all the excitement, defiance and pride of a pivotal modern heartland rock band utterly revived.”

– CLASSIC ROCK (****)

“The Gaslight Anthem at their most glorious and furious… joyous confirmation that The Gaslight Anthem are entirely unburdened by concern that their near decade in the wilderness has made barely any difference to their sound.”

– UNCUT (****)

“An album that personifies The Gaslight Anthem’s magic all over again.”

– DIY (****)

“HISTORY BOOKS picks up exactly where the band left off, but with a renewed wind in their sails. Big guitars, anthemic singalongs and bruised and bloodied ballads are in no short supply, while Fallon’s existential lyricism reveals a renewed nuance to his songwriting.”

– CLASH (8/10)

“The Gaslight Anthem at their unmistakable, brusque best. There’s a huge amount of depth to HISTORY BOOKS, and in its quietest moments it sparkles like the best uncut gems… An excellent new chapter to the band’s story.”

– DORK (****)

“Even with the long break, GLA pretty much picks up where they left off.”

– UPROXX

“Overall, the tone on HISTORY BOOKS is less frenetic and more reflective. It’s the work of a band that has arguably outgrown the fiery intensity of youth without losing the passion that made the Gaslight Anthem so compelling in the first place.”

– PASTE

“HISTORY BOOKS is the sound of a band who truly feel comfortable and happy in their own skin…It’s a wonderful return – if they ever really left at all.”

– FLOOD

“A stirringly evocative musical experience. The Gaslight Anthem’s new album is a tremendous success, its clever, tenderly relatable explorations of life and death especially relevant to the current moment.”

– UNDER THE RADAR (8/10)
