Born out of the Orange County, California DIY scene, popfree induce an energetic, passionate sound built on the influence of emo, post-hardcore, and indie rock bands such as No Knife, The Jazz June, Braid and Cursive. The band made their debut in 2022, hitting a real stride in 2025 with the release of their Spring EP on New Morality Zine. Now popfree are gearing up to release their new full-length Overt, due out October 23rd. Throughout the seven tracks, dynamic rhythms and lush textures meet emotionally charged vocals that deliver lyrics about struggle and connection.
Having already shared the head-spinning single “Fools Gold” last month, today popfree tackle the push and pull of life with single “Giving Up.” Serving as the album opener, the sprawling track builds on the feeling of being at “rock bottom” and coming to the surface. Guitars twist and turn between full bodied melodies and quiet nods, matching the oscillating intensity of Jacob Beaver and Vincent Mann’s vocals. The accompanying video, directed by Bleaker Digital, pulls into the emotional energy of the song spotlighted by a sunset rooftop performance by the band and old childhood footage.

Overt was recorded and mixed by Colin Knight at Paradise Studios in Anaheim, California and was mastered by Ben Harris. The record is available for preorder on vinyl and CD through New Morality Zine.
